Polar Plunge
Dino!

It was a stroke of luck that they'd found the caribou carcass. Rœkia didn't know who had brought it down but there were no other predators visible at the kill, only a cluster of ravens. She snarled and drove a few of the birds away to make room for herself and her cousin. Her fangs ripped the slivers of meat from the carcass as she scrounged for enough to fill her belly. All the while she ate she kept her senses tuned to what was around her. All of a sudden the ravens scattered into the sky, taking off into the air. The call they made was a warning and she looked up to see a large polar bear lumbering toward the kill.

Lukina spied the kill at the same time her older cousin had. She was wary of the raven's but as Rœkia pushed a way in for them she scrambled under the larger wolf's belly and stuck her head out between Rœkia's front legs to work at scraping some meat from the caribou's back ribs with her tongue. She nipped here and there, working to get as much off the kill as she could. Lukina jumped a bit when the raven's took off but she didn't think much of it. More meat for her! She noticed that Rœkia had stopped eating. "What? What is it?" She peeked up over the carcass and saw the bear. The bear saw her, a young, vulnerable animal in a long winter and the bear moved in to attack.

Apollinaris Galanis Molon Labe It was the smell of fresh blood that pulled him in, his stomach instantly on edge. He could definitely eat, and there would be no harm in poking around to see who the kill belonged to. Upon investigation, it was clear he was not the first one to arrive. It was a single wolf eagerly eating away at the large fallen beast, with a scattering of ravens a bit away. Perhaps they wouldn't mind sharing? It was an awful lot of meat, after all, and he seriously doubted they had taken the bison down all by themselves. He made his way closer with his head high and a smile upon his lips, making it very apparent he didn't want a fight. Before he could even address the woman, a massive white creature lumbered closer, jaws agape and roaring. Apollinaris was startled for just a split second before the mantle of the Spartan fell upon his shoulders. The man charged forward, still unaware that a child was present. He hoped to startle the bear just as it had startled him - he raced forward with his own maw agape and snarling, hackles bristled and teeth bared. Fear wasn't in his vocabulary as he kept rushing forward, aiming to draw the bear off to the side. Maybe the woman could be useful and attack from the side while the bear was distracted by the man's showy charge, teeth snapping as Apollinaris side stepped to the left. |

Rœkia was torn between running and trying to drive the bear off. The problem with running was her small cousin was still limited in speed and endurance. The other problem was the bear was far to big and powerful to fight off alone. What to do? Rœkia frizzed up to make herself look bigger and she growled menacingly. The bear was either completely unimpressed or too hungry to care and when Lukina made her presence known the bear charged. She tensed and prepared to spring when a man appeared on the scene and charged the bear. As the bear turned its focus onto the man, Rœkia eyed an opening and charged at the bear's right side. There wasn't much in the way of vulnerable spots so she opted for the bear's right ankle. She bit down low and hard, thrashing her head to rip through fur and flesh. She wanted to wound the bear and slow it down.

"Look out!" Lukina yelled as the bear charged. She wanted so badly to help but she also was scared and she didn't want to be in the way. A stranger appeared and started to lure the bear away. That's when her cousin charged as well. Lukina scrambled on top of the carcass, watching the fight unfold. She was torn, she wanted to run but she also wanted to watch the two wolves battle the bear and see what she could learn. Maybe both was an option? She scrambled away from the kill, just far enough to duck in the brush that lined the rocky shore. There she hid, and watched, and learned.

Apollinaris Galanis Molon Labe His eyes glanced away from the bear long enough to see the woman run at the creature herself, and Apollinaris was glad she didn't take the opportunity to tuck tail and run. He would no doubt have taken on the bear alone, foolish or not, but it was better to have the company. The scent of blood had incensed the creature - then another flash of white caught his eye, and Apollinaris glanced away again to see a young child scurry away from the bison. That glance was enough for him to catch a claw to his shoulder, and the pain brought his attention back to the bear. He leapt back at another attempted swipe, but the bear's attention was switched to the woman. She must have made contact, since the bear was beginning to twist around to switch targets. Apollinaris took the opportunity and lunged. The neck was the best place for an attack, but it wasn't quite the right moment for that. Instead, he opted for the bear's own shoulder. Sabers ripped through fur and flesh, the man pushing as much as he could to try and find a tendon, ligament, bone - something to sever and hobble the creature. Unsure of what damage he had actually inflected, Apollinaris withdrew and side stepped some more, this time back toward the bear's hindquarters. Blood smeared the man's shoulder but he ignored the pain, taunting the bear as he took a few more steps back. |

Rœkia tensed as she saw the bears head twist around toward her but the man at the front managed to distract it yet again. Perfect! He bought just the time she needed. She scissored her jaws, working further through flesh and muscle to the bears achilles tendon. White a fierce twisting of her head she sliced through the tendon and immediately the bear's stance changed as the limb was lamed. The bear roared and flailed. Taking that as her cue to get the heck out of dodge she let go and sprang to the side, the bear's claws clipping her left thigh as she got out of the way. She skidded to a halt and turned to face the bear. It stumbled to its feet, bloodied and battered. It seemed unsure if it wanted to continue. Rœkia's hackles raised as she took a step menacingly toward the bear, trying to look as fierce as she could to finish driving it off.

Lukina watched in awe as the duo fought, it was clear the man had prior knowledge in battle. She hoped to be like them some day, a fierce warrior capable of defending those she cared about when it was necessary. Between the two the bear was wounded and it seemed to be debating if it should indeed continue. Was the carcass worth the risk of further injury? She saw her cousin putting on a fierce display and she bounded out of her hiding place as she growled and fluffed up her own fur. She tried to look as fierce and as scary as possible. Sure, she was only a pup but maybe it would help the bear realize that it wasn't worth being outnumbered.
