Great White Shark Jerky [AW]

Once Aurielle and Ardyn had returned from their trip to Abaven, Cairo had been booted out to take a trip before the winter weather could fully set in. The season was turning, and there was a drive to bring home food when he went back from this trip east.

He’d not come to this bay before, so he slowed down as he padded across the sand, buffeted by the wind, but comfortably covered by his full armor and cloak. Now and then he paused, flipping shells with the claws of his bracers to see if any of them contained anything. He found several crabs, dispatching them and tucking them away in his pouches, before a large form caught his eye a way ahead and his ears perked, pace quickening a bit.

A grin settled on his features at the sight of the large shark on the sand. It was still alive, barely, gills struggling to breath, so he made the decision that this was where he’d camp tonight. He chose a place well above the tide marks, calling to Enito and Chrys as he began digging a pit in the sand, preparing for a fire.

The pale barn owl was first to arrive, dropping to perch on the Sentinel’s back. Enito padded up, settling in to help dig and shape the pit. Soon a fire crackled in the pit, fueled by dry driftwood found up and down the beach. The shark finally expired and Cairo made many, many trips, using his bracers’ bear claws to cut shark meat into strips, speared on sticks and jabbed deep into the sand to dry over the fire.

Finally, out of sticks, Cairo settled by the fire, stretching his toes with a sigh and watching the rising moon crest over the surf. Chrys hunted in the sky above, keeping an eye out for danger as she did. Enito sat nearby, weaving baskets using the coastal grasses, preparing to use them for the dried shark strips when the trio started on the trek home to the west.
