There's No Crying In Baseball

Come down, come down sweet reverence
By the time they got around the lake territory the clouds had finally lifted and the rain had stopped. They'd worked their way south through a wooded area that also seemed to have been claimed by Valhalla's neighbors and headed toward the Fjord. They planned to head along the southern border of Boreas along the ocean front but Jynn found herself slowing as she peered into the woods and spied the opening of a ravine descending deeper into the wooded area. It was hard to make out at first but as she looked she could see walls of brown rock rising from the green grass and shrubs. The walls themselves were covered in brush and roots. The trees twisted skyward, still full of crowns of green leaves. Sunlight streamed in in several bold beams that created a sharp contrast between the light and dark, almost black, shadows of the wooded area. All she could see through the ravine were trees but she imagined it went a lot deeper.

Álarr continued on ahead, he just put his head down and kept walking but he was glad when the rain cleared and the sun finally came out. They were working their way ever onward toward the Bifrost. Álarr would be glad when he could return to Fireside and take a nice long nap after making good on his promise to escort Jynn to Auster. Speaking of Jynn. Álarr looked back to see her staring at something. Concern flickered across his face for a moment. "What is it?" He pulled up along side her and peered down a shallow ravine covered in foliage. As far as he could tell he didn't see anything. "Come on, we need to get to Auster by nightfall. That ravine cuts right through their pack lands and is best avoided."

Jynn felt another sting of resentment toward packs. Claiming land that others might want to see and explore and hoarding it for themselves. She sighed and trotted after Álarr, moving back into the wooded area that surrounded the ravine and much of this stretch of Boreas. She was glad in some ways they'd gone around it and saw the opening from ground level. She could imagine walking through the main woodland and tripping into that mess. "This pack is kind of hard to get around, so close to the Bifrost." She'd gone around it several times but never from this angle before. She imagined whoever had set up camp here had a pretty good idea of who was coming and going between Boreas and Auster. "Say, Álarr, you said you're a healer and also a fighter. Do you… like fighting at all?"

Álarr was glad when they picked their pace back up and continued moving. The fjord would take a good amount of time to get through and he didn't want to waste the day with a light pace in this easy stretch. He glanced back at Jynn as she asked him if he liked fighting. He quirked a brow at her and shrugged. "It's a necessary skill. To protect my pack and my family I must know how to fight and do so brutally if the occasion calls for it." But did he like it? That was difficult to say. As a pup he did. It was so exciting to fight his siblings and to show his father what he could do. However, as he aged, fighting became more of a necessary tool rather than something he did for fun. "What about you?"

Jynn listened as Álarr spoke though her eyes still wandered over the forested area, taking in the rich green color before winter would inevitably snuff it out. Though who was to say. Maybe being this close to the equator it would remain in some state of green for longer. Álarr gave a straightforward answer and though it wasn't quite the answer she was looking for she opted to just take it. "Yea, I like to spar. I think it's fun, but I don't like getting into serious fights that much. Not that I'm some sort of push over mind you. If I have to remove an asshole from his balls I'll do it but I'd rather there just not be a fight at all." She was gifted with great speed and would use that if the occasion called for it, but she understood what Álarr was saying about protecting those he cared about. Being on her own she hadn't thought of it that way.

Álarr was surprised to hear that Jynn liked to spar or that she could even spar at all. She didn't look like a fighter with those impossibly long and delicate looking legs. Perhaps he was being too quick to judge. He chuckled as she continued on. Again, he found it hard to imagine her seriously maiming someone. Álarr on the other hand had made it his business to know how the canine body was put together… and as a result he also learned how to pull it apart. He supposed though, if he had his way, he'd just spend his days crafting tinctures and teas and helping his pack mates in need. He wasn't the sort to just go running about the world helping any that asked but he did feel a sense of importance in caring for the wolves of Fireside.
