Modesty’s head was a little fuzzy after the festivities of the night before. It had been a great time though! and the scent of wood smoke and alcohol still clung to her fur. The sun was so bright that she was relieved to enter the shaded confines of the swamp where she hoped her family would still be lingering. A shoulder bumped companionably against Gilgamesh’s as she used her nose to pick her way back to where the small family should have still been encamped. She’d only been gone for a few nights, surely they wouldn’t have gone far.
“They shouldn’t be too far away,” she told her new friend with a smile, and when Moo chattered in the branches overhead, she knew they weren’t far away now. “Mother?” There wasn’t an immediate answer, so she tried again. “Mum? Muuuum? Mummy!” still silence. “MAAAaaaaah?” Her grin was growing wider, her tail waving wider. She had never been so openly obnoxious to the woman that gave her life, ever. But this was important! “I made a friend!”
“Speech”
Agreeing to meet Modesty's mother had initially been made due to his interest in learning more about her... faith. That's what he'd prefer to call it at this point. Now that the haze of the festivities antics was bogging down his mind, he followed the chipper girl hesitantly. Late-night drinking and bonfire scents lingered on his own coat as he tried to shake it off. It wouldn't do too well of a first impression if he brought the girl home hungover. Weary as the mud squelched between his toes, his ears perked forward as she called out. Her shoulder bumped against his and his skin bristled for a moment. Not being used to her friendly gestures, his own stomach did somersaults. Still unrecognizing the feelings welling up in his belly, Gil brushed it off as they trekked deeper into the swamp. A friendly animal chittered overhead, making his chin turn upward for a moment. Eyeing it carefully, he kept a distance now, falling a step or two behind Modesty. Her words echoed over the chill of the swamp and his ears fell half backward. A friend? Are we that close now? Gil questioned to himself, still denying the warmth he felt in his cheeks every time she smiled at him. "Are you sure she's here?" He questioned quietly, his own nose touching her side briefly as he eyed their darkening surroundings. |

She approached and saw her daughter with another man, one as old as herself. He wasn't entirely remarkable, nor unremarkable. She sized him up as Modesty mentioned she made a friend. Her eyebrow spot raised. "Define... friend." She eyes the much older male. Did he really befriend a- In Tox's eyes- pup?

When her mother made her presence known, Modesty all but danced over, placing a reverent kiss on her mother's chin, oblivious to the look she was given. When she asked What sort of friend the girl's face lit up. "Well, I ended up at a place where the trees twist together and reach almost up to the sky, and they were just like steps! So I climbed up a bit, Moo was mad at me," Her kite companion chattered his agreement from his perch overhead, "But it was safe! I mean... maybe, because I did fall, but Gilgamesh caught me! Or he tried to anyway, I might have squished him a bit." She offered her friend another apologetic smile. "Anyway we got talking and Abraxas came up, and I mentioned that you said others can ascend through great deeds, and he asked what sort of great deeds, and I said you would be the better one to ask because I don't know anyone that knows more about Abraxas than you do! So he came home with me. He's really nice mum!" Her tail beat a steady tempo at her heels. She looked back and forth between the two people she probably liked most in the whole world right now, hoping they would get along.

Holy, devine in your power
For a minute, Gil wondered if maybe Modesty was just crazy... The way she called out for Mother, but no one answered. His ears fell back for a moment as his tail hung cautiously between his ankles. Watching with weary eyes, he was surprised when a female appeared out of the shadows. Sure, their age difference would be an issue, but Modesty wasn't that young, was she? Looking between mother and daughter, his paws retreated back one step as their friendship was questioned. Holding back a huff in his throat, Modesty piped up before he could do anything stupid. Her babble went on for a bit and he couldn't hide the smile. The description of him catching her was not exactly the truth. In reality, his intentions had been quite cruel. If she had been anyone else, it would've ended up in a brawl. These days he was always getting himself into some type of trouble. Yet, she'd had her way with her words and that much had been true. He really was interested in learning more about their divine knowledge. Though nice was not exactly the first word he'd choose to describe himself. As Modesty looked to him with a beaming smile, he offered a gentle one in return. Focusing now on Toxicity, he nodded his head with some sort of respect. "Her story is mostly true," Gil offered with a shrug. "I do wish to know more," was all he said with bated breath. If she turned him away, he wouldn't be offended but understood. Protecting one's daughter was probably more important than culling more for their... religion. |
