Meissa

the most dangerous thing is to love

Her paws traced the edges of the stones, trying to keep a far distance from the cliffs themselves while keeping a good vantage point. She'd only been here for a little bit, only since the darkness truly fell and took the world in its embrace, so she didn't know the area well enough to risk getting too close to the edge. She didn't know exactly how high up they were, but from the way the wind whipped through the air, it couldn't have been any less than a hundred feet up - probably far more.

It made her nervous, but oh - it was so beautiful too! She could see the faint glow at the edge of the cliff, hinting at the crystals that she was almost certain split out from the wall just beyond her sight. She wanted to go, to look over, but the chances of strangers being near and taking it as a moment to either seize her or throw her over the edge were far too likely.

She swallowed, shaking off her nerves to scan the opposite direction of the cliff.

It was a field that seemed to ebb and bob all on its own. Flashes of colour lit by dim glow marked the flowers, though she had also walked through them enough to confirm their presence. She was struck by the contrast she sensed here. The drop into nothingness a hundred feet from her versus the bed of flowers, lit by strange glowing insects.

And the voices, ever present in this strange endless night.

Was she going crazy?

The changes by now had become impossible to ignore. At first, the slightly longer nights were able to be attributed to the change of seasons... but now? The omnipresent moon? The darkness that persisted even when it should be midday? The glow? Fireflies? Voices?

She'd driven herself half mad with worry. Theory wasn't used to this kind of creeping dread. Disasters? Those she could handle. She was excellent in crisis. But this extended gloom, pulling Boreas onwards toward... what? Her thoughts circled endlessly like so, even when she broke from her typical patrol at the pack borders. Maybe she could clear her head if she stood and looked out over the choppy waves. The view of the bay from above was breathtaking - it often soothed her, a warm balm to her soul. She hurried her steps, eager to take in the view for a long, precious moment before returning back to patrol.

As she emerged from the tree line set back from the meadow, she spotted a dark shape moving in the undergrowth. Snow hadn't touched this place yet, although the wind whipping off the coast was bitterly cold. Theory slit her eyes against the brisk salty air and weaved her way through the plants. "Hello?" she called across the meadow. "Have you come to admire the view as well?"

Meissa

the most dangerous thing is to love

Meissa's eyes were closed, listening to the whispers to try to figure out what they might be saying, who they may be. They danced and floated, always just out of reach of her understanding or recollection. She did not know what they meant, whose voices they were, but she felt a pang as she knew one voice was not among them. Shaking off the feeling that twisted in her, she looked to the sound of the true voice, a welcome distraction from the hiss.

Inhale, exhale, calm down.

After a moment, she dared to call back, Hello! Swallow. Her legs were moving now, carefully picking her way towards the woman who kept growing larger and larger. Meissa had thought the horse she met massive but now she was wondering if it was she who was small here. It felt odd - she was always used to being larger and bulkier than everyone around her. From what she could see of the shadowy woman, the latter was still true but she felt like a clumsy dwarf in relation.

Is it quite beautiful, she began before giving a soft laugh, Probably would be prettier if we could see it in sunlight? She looked to the other, the end of her statement upturned into a question.

What is going on?

Normally, Meissa would have thought she could handle a strange situation alright. One at a time, anyways. Alone, here in the strange world-eating dark, she was filled with uncertainty. She wondered if the woman before her felt the same way or if she had some security - friends, family? - to rely on and comfort one another.

"Oh, yes," Theo said, fondly. Warmly. There were memories tucked between her words, the accumulation of the many nights she'd snuck to this cliffside. Especially after Shaye had died. This very cliffside had crumbled and entombed her so long ago, leaving such brutal agony and confusion in her wake. But this place, despite it all, was beautiful. "It's a sight to see," she promised. >"Is this your first time on the eastern coast?" Meissa didn't smell of anything familiar at all. Theory always felt a certain pang when she met a loner, equal parts yearning and pity. The desire to have no responsibility, no fealty to anyone but herself... and yet, she wouldn't trade Abaven and her family for any amount of freedom. Even if the weight of it all was grinding her down slowly.

"This gloom is unusual - if you're new to these parts. It isn't always like this," she laughed lowly. Tersely. "I can't quite wrap my head around it, but I'll figure it out." Theory still had to reach out to allies and confirm this eerie weather had touched every coast. She was eager to hear from Aurielle on the far side of the continent - and a little bit afraid, too. If it wasn't localized - if this darkness had spread, or was spreading - what did that even mean? "I'm Theory, alpha of Abaven. We're nearby," she murmured, gesturing back over her shoulder.

Meissa

the most dangerous thing is to love

Meissa was uncertain.

This woman seemed warm, friendly. Almost... nostalgic? As if a lifetime was held behind words that the loner had no way of understanding - a mere glimpse into a different world. Yes, I - ah - I'm a bit lost, she gave a soft laugh, ears flicking back in embarrassment. She wasn't so sure of herself here, though she had been getting better. More confident in herself and her place in the world, until that world had shattered, leaving her with cuts and bruises.

Not physical.

Or at least, if they had been, they were well hidden by swaths of fur that now shifted as she turned her head to gaze over the glinting lights again, even as they floated over the blackness over the cliff. She couldn't quite tell if there was anything out there, in the distance - she would have to return one day when day had returned. It's so strange, she agreed, eyes turning upward to the sky, The moon's taken the sun's place. Meissa had no way to tell whether this was permanent or if the world would return to the warm embrace of daylight. How could she even tell if it was night or day?

The fauna, too, seemed confused by it all. Day birds and night birds all seemed quiet and prey-things seemed unnerved.

When Theory began to speak again, an introduction, Meissa faced her again quickly, ears pricked. Salmon eyes followed as the other indicated back over her shoulder. Oh! She dipped her head, trying to be respectful. I'm Meissa, A quick, focused sniff confirmed to her that despite faint traces of the pack's odor, this land was not scent marked. I'm looking for someone, but I don't know where he went.

Did he still live?
