Though he never was a fan of this place - too arid, too dry, too dusty - he swallowed back his inner complaints in lieu of focus. Focus on finding an opponent, and working out his methodology of attacks, offensive and defensive, that he’d learned in his homeland. What to do if an opponent launched forward, from the side, attempted to lurch at his blindspot - he had to consider all avenues. Though, every opponent was different, which he didn’t mind because it’d make him not only more well-rounded was a warrior, but more experienced, too. Chartruse eyes peered across the battlefield in vague disinterest, yet a glimmer of curiosity was present as he picked yet another open, dry spot. Cringing as the dust and heat mixed to create a bone-dry environment not to his taste, he called for another opponent. He enjoyed the spars, they gave him a reason to continue his mission as well. Nothing like being angry over his father abandoning him and his brother to fuel his motivation. |

The call for an opponent brought him out of his reverie, and he took only a few moments to settle his thoughts before lumbering over. He was always eager for a spar, day or night, rain or shine. It was something that really let him just be himself without needing to put on any sort of show. In a way it was freeing. And the best part was it got his blood pumping with some excitement. Raylan huffed loudly to clear his nose of the dust that was swirling around him as he walked, just a tad annoyed by the little dust devils, but at the sight of the other wolf a great grin appeared on his maw. The wolf was much smaller than him, but then again quite a few wolves were, and the most interesting thing was that their coat colours were somewhat similar, from the darker base to the spattering of red on their legs and heads. Well, well, wasn't this a fateful day. He stopped a fair distance away, cocking his head at the other wolf as he took them in. "Got any rules you'd like me to adhere to in this spar?" Sometimes it was fun to just go all out, no rules to hold them back other than the obvious no killing your opponent, but he'd acquiesce to a few rules if the other wolf was so inclined. |

Ah, his opponent had arrived. It was as if he’d been expecting one - which he was - but they all seemed to magically appear from the annoying bursts of dustclouds that scattered this strange flat plane. The koi wolf, though quite a ways smaller, wasn’t even the least bit alarmed. Instead, his neutral and almost unamused gaze swept a quick once-over on the male, observance some similarities in their coloring. Both males had a smattering of reddish and charcoal on their bodies, especially at the crest of their heads. Though, he doubted this male was a koi wolf like him, for whatever reason. Still, he couldn’t make any solid assumptions, could he? He didn’t even know this guy. Usagi tilted his head slightly as the larger wolf asked if there were any rules. He never really had a set number of rules, but he figured he’d lay a simple boundary. "I’d just prefer to keep my limbs intact," He said simply, voice devoid of any discerning emotion. Was it meant to be somewhat of a joke at the same time? Not intentionally, either. With that, he figured he’d skip any other formalities and just go for it. He, too, derived excitement and adrenaline from the thrill of a good spar. Briefily closing his eyes and taking in a large, strangely calm inhale, the male flung his chartruse gaze open and sprinted head-on to his opponent, launching his body off the ground a stride away from the other guy’s chest and face. Mid-air, he aimed to strike out powerful hind legs at the male’s hind end, with the intent of making him stumble if not fall from the firm impact. Though nkt the biggest wolf, Usagi took advantage if his svelte form in other ways. A chortle escaped Raylan at the singular 'rule', unable to hold in his amusement at the deadpanned tone. Ah, this wolf was a bit of a serious one then it seemed. It would be easy enough to follow, as he had no intention of actually harming the smaller wolf. This was just a simple spar, more to brush up his skills than anything else. "Very well then, lad," he said simply to show he was acknowledging the rule. Then the wolf closed his eyes, and Raylan took that time to ready himself, rolling his shoulders back and tucking his chin down to his chest. Just because this was a spar it didn't mean he had to go be dumb about protecting the more delicate regions of his body. The smaller wolf decided to run at him head-on, and Raylan barely held back a snort of laughter at the decision. With their size difference's it wouldn't take much effort to block the attack, but just at the last moment his opponent darted to the side, and then he felt a paw make solid contact with his hind leg. He wobbled from the hit, stumbling to the side a few steps as he attempted to regain his balance, not having had expected that to happen at all. Perhaps this wolf was far more skilled than he had first thought. Managing to not completely fall to the ground, Raylan swung his hefty weight around to move at a lumbering pace towards his opponent. He wanted to run head-first at the smaller wolf's side and try to use his thick skull to impact right behind where the ribs ended, hoping to push the other wolf off-balance to stop him from getting in another sneaky kick attack. Usagi felt his attack hit, a singular well-placed jab to the wolf’s hind limb. Upon it rendering him wobbly, he was attempting to lean in to take advantage of his off-balance momentum to further his offense when the russet-patched wolf turned and rammed his skull into his ribs. With a sharp inhale in masked pain, Usagi used the sudden pivot of his stumble to stop himself from colliding to the earth completely, his left side bent closer to the earth than the right. In a fierce and quick twist, the wolf aimed to use his bent left hind leg - the one with more power built up - to swiftly spray a screen of dust in the wolf’s face , assuming it was facing him and lower to the ground. In the moment, where the haze muddled their vision, Usagi aimed to whirl his entire back to face him and jam his skull into the taller male’s cheek, almost needing to rise on his hind limbs momentarily. He knew it would be a risky move, considering he could get knocked over in that second, but he hoped the dustscreen and the subsequent swift check of the male’s cheek would offer a rather harmless but just as unespected move like before. His headbutt was successful in at least partially getting the smaller wolf to the ground, but he wasn't expecting to get a sudden dust cloud and bits of sand sprayed his direction. His eyes clenched shut and he swiftly twisted his head out of the way to minimise getting any of the dust in where it wasn't supposed to go. A loud sneeze left him at the dust that found its way into his nostrils, and he backed up a few steps as he raised his head a bit to escape the worst of it, now looking through squinted eyes at his opponent. That had been a dirty move, but he could respect it. Raylan opened his eyes just in time to see his opponent slam his skull right into his own cheek, and even with the height distance it whipped his head around from the force of it, as well as from Raylan trying to dodge out of the way. He felt his teeth bite down on his tongue and the inside of his cheek, tasting the sharp metallic tang of blood. That had been a sneaky move, catching him off guard like that. Bringing his head around again, he lifted his forelegs to bear hug the smaller wolf around the shoulders while they were still dropping down to all fours, pushing down with his weight to try and pin his opponent beneath him. This fight was looking to be a bit more tricky than he had initially thought it would be.
