Duck Pond
A Game!
Kal barreled his way through the gate, tail swishing faster than a dragonfly’s wings. This place was the best! Everywhere he went was more new stuff and wolves and coydogs and fun. The boy waited his turn with a proper impatience of an excited pup. He turned about in circles at points, sat, scratched at an ear, twisted around again.
Finally it got to be his turn! Walking up to the pool and peering in at all the ducks Kal tried to figure out the best of em. They all might look the same but one was better than the rest and he’d figure it out! After a moment he stretched his neck out far to one that wasn’t quite as close as others. It was obviously trying to avoid being grabbed because it was better.
“This one!” Kal held the duck aloft, offering it to the coydog, “Bet that’s the best of em all, right?”

He’d been watching the games for a good while, pondering over which to pick out, listening to the happy chatter of passing wolves and the cries and calls of the coydogs congratulating and calling on the carnival-goers to try their paws at a game.
The atmosphere was helping, slowly, to raise his spirits, and he was quietly grateful for it. Perhaps it was time for a little game action.
He rose at last and padded amiably toward the ducks, tail swaying lazily at his hocks as he studied the many targets, watching them float by before ducking his head swiftly and snapping his jaws toward one that looked particularly interesting.

The girl watched as her brother chose his duckie and her own golden gaze searched for the ducks in front of her. They floated lazily by her nose as she looked over the lip of the pond, taking her time in deciding. Her brows furrowed, but she finally made her choice, the girl pointed determinedly and awaited the result.

Mom and Revenant made their way to the game booths and he followed after on gangly paws. Curiosity filling him to the brim as he lifted mismatched paws to the lip of the pond, peering at the rows of ducks waiting for him to pick one. With a determined decision the boy grabbed his duck, eager to know what he’d gotten.

How could anyone resist the chance to take part in a festival? Certainly not Bog, and certainly not now that his lungs were beginning to feel as clear as they had before the long night. Ambling along through the throngs of unfamiliar wolves, he was glad he'd worn his mask and left Bug at home. The frog would have been a real stick in the mud right now, if he had to guess. The raucous voice of a carnie coydog drew his attention, verdant gaze drifting towards the booth that was tended by a dark furred canine with the longest ears he'd ever seen. Catching ducks? Well, that seemed right up his alley! Gait shifting into more of a skipping trot, off he went to join the growing crowd that surrounded the duck pond. By the time it was his turn to try and catch one of the floating ducks, he had been caught up in the cacophony around him and nearly missed the beckoning of the carnie. With a small grunt, he plodded forwards and peered down at the idly floating toys. Would the coydog notice if he simply claimed the duck itself as his prize? It might look nice on one of the shelves in his den. Or perhaps he could tie it to a branch overhanging the banks of the swamp and leave it floating there like a docked boat. Well, better to focus on the matter at hand before getting caught up in potentially helping himself to the game pieces, right? In a flash, he lunged forward and grabbed hold of the next wooden duck that floated past. With its pockmarked and well worn head clasped tight in his jaws, he found himself wondering how many other creatures had been playing these games over the years. By the texture alone, these ducks must have seen their fair share of abuse at the teeth of predators like himself. Backpedaling from the edge of the pond, he tilted his head to offer the tail end of the duck to the carnie that was tending the game. What did he get?! Was it better than just taking the duck with him?! "speech" |

As the season dragged on, the titan was gradually regaining his sight. Vague shapes blurred into one another through his field of vision, but at least he could mostly navigate the world without assistance during the day. Beneath the milky film that still covered his eyes, hints of their amber hues were beginning to peek through. Which was why the potential to hunt a few fake ducks in a small pond seemed like the most amenable option to him. He lumbered towards the idle, milling crowd around the edge of the gate that held them back from the current contestant. Being a head taller than many of the attendees, it was a bit easier to squint over their heads at what the player was doing during their turn. They walked up to the glittering water of the pond, and quickly lunged forward to grab their prize. Easy enough, right? By the time his turn came around, the beast was confident in his ability to at play the game. Ambling past the opened gate, he waited until his toes dipped into the water. With his head low between thick shoulders, the giant watched the blurry shapes float across his field of view. And when the next one got into range, he reached out to grab it in his teeth. Pearly white fangs connected with the soft wood, and he could taste cool water on his tongue. With a grunt of satisfaction, he took a few awkward steps backwards and searched for the figure of the dark furred coydog who was managing the players. Tendrils of glowing spit were beginning to mingle with the droplets of water as they slipped from the smooth surface of the duck's wooden body. He lowered his head to drop the little toy duck near the feet of the carnie, and waited for the verdict. "speech" |

NONE OF THIS REFLECTS HOW VIRGIL FEELS ABOUT YOU OR YOUR CHARACTER, PROMISE!
An aimless, ambling gait kept the youngster listlessly moving through the festivities. From the site of the tourneys to the food to the best spot of them all, the carnival games! The boy's companions kept him from wandering into danger, for the most part. The lamb that he'd recently adopted as a new best friend was hardly useful, being prone to wandering off to investigate things on his own. The shrike, on the other hand, kept a close eye on the strange pup that kept offering him the leftovers from his dinner. When Raven strayed into someone's path, dreamy and distant, the shrike was quick to land on his little head and give him a swift peck on the forehead to draw him back to reality. By the time he had caught his brother's scent amongst the myriad other threads of scent that came from the dozens of carnival attendees, he was growing tired. Perhaps Acacius would be able to help him find somewhere quiet to sit and listen in on the festivities from a safe distance. It seemed like his brother was playing a game of sorts, and when he heard the baying voice of the coydog that was tending the game he was suddenly wide awake and ready to play. All interest in finding his sibling and getting out of here was lost, because it was time for fun! Scampering through the throngs of legs and dangling tails, the blind youngster shoved his way to the front and burst through the open gate at the first opportunity. No one tossed him aside or cuffed him upside the head for cutting in line, so obviously it was fine. He could hear the small waves of the pond lapping at the banks, and the subtle clunk, thunk of the wooden ducks bumping into one another on their course about the pond. He plodded closer until his front toes were submerged. Long, sensitive whiskers brushed the surface of the water and sent a thrill of cold up the length of the coarse hairs. As one of the wooden ducks bumped the side of his muzzle, he was quick to twist his head and grab a hold of it before it could float away. His grip was awkward and tenuous at best, so he quickly backpedaled and dragged the toy from the water by its neck. He dropped it after he for a few good steps away from the water, thin tail wagging with furious delight. The boy's entire back end was wriggling with excitement as he waited for the coydog to tell him what he'd won. "I got 'im!" he announced with a huge grin, oversized forepaws dancing with anticipation. "speech" |

With the gradual improvements being made to the new territory that Abaven had taken over, a small break felt appropriate. When the carnival was announced, it only seemed right to head south to take part. He'd escorted Raure down as well, though the boy hadn't stuck around for long. No surprise, there was so much to see and do around here. He'd debated signing up for the tourneys, but for whatever reason he hadn't pulled the trigger. Clad in his well worn armour, the burly young male wandered his way through the booths of the carnival. There were so many sights and smells he could hardly take it all in at once. Who knew there was such a potential for fun and festivities, after the horrors of the long night? Perhaps this was exactly what they all needed this summer. The crowd that had gathered around this game wasn't especially large, and so when he meandered over he found himself quickly drawn into watching the participants try their luck at catching one of the little wooden ducks floating in the pond. The long-eared coydog that was managing the flow of players beckoned him to take his turn with a jovial demeanour that pulled a smile from him almost immediately. He took his place at the edge of the little pond and watched the wooden ducks float past. The pale yearling didn't waste much time grabbing a hold of the next little toy that bobbed into range, and when he carried it over to the coydog he did so with a small smile pulling at the edge of his maw. Placing it gently at the feet of the carnie, there was a hint of childlike glee plucking a merry tune at his heartstrings. Yeah, he'd definitely needed this. "speech" |

Travelling with kids was a wild ride. Not that Mossy had expected any differently, but it seemed to suit her. When the distraction of a carnival was put under their noses, all three where quick to divert their path to check it out. As luck would have it, their final destination happened to be in the queue just in front of her. “Boooooog!” She greeted her kin excitedly, her whole back end wiggling with the excitement of seeing a familiar face. “I have someone… well, someones for you to meet!” She bounded forward giving the floppy eared coydog her widest grin as she bowed down enthusiastically at the pool, snapping water once, then twice before finally pulling a duck from the pool, water coursing down her face. “id-I-weeen?” She asked excitedly, reluctant to return the toy in her mouth.

Psalm wasn't really here with anyone, and she felt it. Technically she had trailed behind her brother but he was escorting his new friend and Psalm felt the ache of loneliness deep in her chest. She couldn't seem to overcome the hurdle of losing everyone but her brother in her life. She was was certain it was a personal problem, no one could stand to be around her so she became withdrawn and didn't socialize much with anyone. She didn't want to give anyone the chance to hurt her anymore. She held herself in a way to make herself as small as possible, get out of everyone's way. She continued to silently tail her brother not bothering to pick up and join him even when the other young man skipped off on his own. She watched him play one of the games and only approached the counter after he'd sauntered off, then she herself pulled a single duck, honestly not even really caring.
