His fathers words when he had shown him the coliseum had clearly been a challenge. One that Basilisk intended to make good on as soon as possible. There wasn’t any real trigger, any reason. He got up that morning, donned his armour, and called his companions. He wasn’t going to wait any longer.

Anticipation running through his veins, he made his way into a wide open space in the Col. it was early morning, the only people up and alert were those on patrols. There was fresh dew on the grass, and a coolness in the air despite the arrival of summer. Setting a comfortable, familiar stance, Basilisk raised his head and howled to his father. The bold notes of a challenge in his tones.


"Speech"

Azure had two recent challenges - one disappointing and sad, the other surprising and potentially even worth his time. When Basilisk called for his prompt arrival, Azure had a feeling that the match to come would best even the last. Finally, his heir was ready to face him. Azure shrugged on his own armor, whistling to his companions to join him as he made his way through the Col and toward the obelisk where Bas now stood. "Today's the day, hmm?" He mused softly, watching his heir with pride in his eyes. The boy was decked to the nines, prepared and ready, there was no argument why he had summoned Azure on this day.

Az's companions fanned out, the leopard moving left while the fisher dove into the grasses on the right. Diablo took to the skies, circling. "I'll give you the first move, a gesture I do not often like to make." A small representation of how much Azure truly wanted Bas to best him, to earn his title the only way Azure knew how.


"Speech"

Basilisk was not left waiting long before his father showed. He grinned at Azure, his blood was up and he was excited for the challenge to come. Nervous too, but that went without saying. He was determined to win. This fight was one of the most important in his life. Impressing his father was extremely important to him. Today, he would show Azure everything he had learnt.

“Thank you” He said, giving his father a toothy grin, before he launched himself forward. At the same time, his falcon swooped low, aiming for a tattered Azure ear. His reindeer trotted up behind his father in an attempt to distract him, and his red panda was hanging onto his back. Ready to provide support against aerial attacks.

As he closed the distance between himself and his father, he reached out in an attempt to slam his right shoulder into the space between Azure’s neck and shoulder. At the same time, his teeth would attempt to gain purchase in his fathers cheek. He was going hard right off the bat.

Basilisk took no time in initiating, moving without hesitation just as the Warlord had hoped he would. From off in the grass the leopard tore forward to intercept the circling reindeer, allowing Azure's attention to remain focused firmly out in front. Diablo swooped downwards as the falcon did, aiming to crash his heavy body into the other aerial companion's before he could come away with more portions of Azure's already damaged ears. The fisher kept eyes upon the panda, moving quickly to re-climb his giant master to mirror it's positioning.

As Basilisk's shoulder came for him, Azure lifted his front end high. It was not enough of a reposition to dodge the attack entirely and with the height difference, Bas's shoulder slam still hit it's mark upon the joint. Azure seethed against the thudding pain as the bruise near-immediately began to set in but continued forward with his attack regardless. Aiming to throw his other forepaw over his son's larger shoulder and hook on with long, curved claws. As Basilisk's jaws came for him he moved to intercept, spreading his own wide and aiming to snap them shut upon the top bridge of Bas's muzzle before the boy could grab hold of his cheek.

"Speech"

The falcon aborted her attempt on Azure’s ears and fell into aerial manoeuvres to avoid the bat’s attack. The red panda and fisher had a standoff as Basilisk collided with his smaller father. Azure’s paw went over Basilisk’s shoulder, and his attempt to bite his fathers cheek was thwarted by Azure’s own jaws in the way. Undeterred, Basilisk stretched his jaw wide, baring his teeth at his father in an attempt to keep the other from biting his nose.

He attempted to raise a paw with the intent of dragging his claws down Azure’s front in order to shake off the paw that he had placed around his shoulder. He was aiming to draw blood, knowing not to take it easy in this fight.

Without being able to find a grip upon the boy's muzzle, Azure refocused his energy into his grab. As Basilisk's jaws parted wider as did Azure's, threatening and warding the boy's own teeth away, but not seeking to land an attack of tooth. Flexing his paw he aimed to drive his claws deeper into his large son's back, both deepening the attack and hoping to find purchase to use to steady himself as Bas's paw came at his own chest.

While Basilisk may not have inherited his mutation specifically, his claws were not entirely wolf either. The feline claws raked down Azure's chest and he tightened his grip, pushing into the attack while at the same time aiming to pull Basilisk from where his paw was behind the shoulder, hoping a burst of strength might be able to take the boy down and make him bow.

The fight did not take long, and though Basilisk struck fast and hard and with confidence, he fell beneath his sire's mutated paws. Azure allowed the boy to stand and stepped back, eyeing the larger wolf thoughtfully. He couldn't help but be slightly disappointed, having been looking forward to the day Basilisk bested him perhaps just as much as Bas himself was. "It was a good try." The Warlord complimented, aiming to clap the boy upon his large shoulder. "What do you feel like you could improve for next time?" There would be a next time, this much Azure was sure. With all the challenges coming his way lately, he wouldn't even be surprised if 'next time' was as soon as Basilisk' cuts bruises had healed. The boy had ambition.

Basilisk was embarrassed and disgruntled. He had wanted so badly… but perhaps he should have taken into account that there was a measure of luck and chance in such things. But it stung, a lot. Levi had beaten their father. The short sprout had managed it, so why couldn’t he?

He faced his dad, his face a little flushed. He did however manage to look his Sire in the eye. “I need to be more unpredictable, and aim to deal more damage immediately. I should have gone for a maim, upped the stakes” he decided. He needed to be more ambitious next time.

"Speech"

The sting of embarrassment in his son's expression was plain to see, but this was perhaps the one child Azure would not kick while he was down. He gave a shallow nod at his son's reply. "If you had gone for a maim, so would I have. You'd be wearing it now." He commented in return. "Sometimes upping the stakes isn't enough, it only makes your opponent fight harder." Azure would never try and dampen his son's ambitions, his tone more conversational than argumentative. Basilisk had done well, but perhaps there was simply more training he needed to do. "Have you spent any time with your new aunts and uncles yet?" Azure asked after a moment, internally cringing at how foreign it felt to title pups that way. "Perhaps training them would help you improve."
