★ Cougar Attack
Random Weather Event

Fighting Event
The winds from the storm over the forest has whipped up more fog than ever seen in this area in living memory. The mists cling so closely to any traveler unlucky enough to be in them that the trees disappear from view, and ones own paws are no longer visible. The only thing that pierces the obscuring fog are the occasional fireflies, which appear to pair up from time to time in an eerie approximation of eyes. They’re just distracting enough you don’t notice that something else is stalking you in the fog, a large cougar has set it’s sights on you.

Vanta had anticipated seeing new things in her exploration outside the north with her mother, but never in her wildest dreams did she think she would see anything like the amount of fog currently present in the woods. It rolled in quickly at a moment she was separated from her supervision, chilling her to the bone and leaving her feeling very, very alone. "Mama?" The pup called out anxiously into the fog. Pawsteps sounded around her, but rather then a voice to return her call, Vanta was met with only a disconcerting quiet.
She continued forward, squinting her eyes open and finding that with the heavy fog cover, she at least could see and navigate without pain. If only there was anything to see. Her tail tucked and the pup pivoted on her paws, lost and unable to even determine direction. Glowing fireflies drew her crystalline gaze up into the tree line, though as she turned her head away she missed the way they seemed to converge into a single pair of watchful eyes. A growl sounded from above, bringing the girl's ears to slick tightly to her skull in fear. "Is anyone there?"

He moves with them, silent but ever-watchful. Dread moves as a guardian, but lost in his own thoughts as well. High steps, nearly holding his breath as he moves. Would he ever be able to move as silently as the predators that he watched for? Maybe. Probably not, but whatever. He had to try, right? He had to try. Keen-eyed, doing his best to keep an eye out for his sister. Family over everything. Maybe, in his way, he keeps an eye out for his mother as well. Though he wouldn't realize it for a long while now, Dread feels compelled to be her keeper as well. The fireflies. They catch Dread's attention, a momentary folly. They catch his attention, and in that moment, he loses sight of Vanta. Dread's heart pounds in his chest. Shit. He'd lost sight of both Vanta and mom in the thick fog. Shit. Again the thought comes. He will not quiver, he will not shake. He can hear his sister calling out for their mother into the darkness, and he moves in the direction of her voice. A growl. Shit. Long strides in the direction of the growl, there's no thought for himself now. "We're okay, it's a cougar," quiet words, Dread doing his best to sound brave. He moves swiftly to the pale girl's side, stretching, making himself appear as large as possible. Teeth gleaming in the low light, flashing as he bares them at the cat. Dread postures forward, a savage growl ripping from his chest. It would not be the cat's day. Not at all. |

Kite had been walking right beside her mother, sister and brother, when the rolling fog swept across them. She stopped in her tracks, blinking furiously thinking something was going on with her crystal eyes. Blindness wasn't anything new to her, but it was disconcerting and sudden. It took her a few moments to realise her family was no longer with her. "Venta, Dread, Mumma?" She called out.
Maybe it said something about her that her mind went to her sister first. After a moment of straining, she heard her sister's voice and aas off like a rocket. Racing towards the direction of her sister's voice. thoroughly spooked herself. She found her sister and could just make out her features, ears back in alarm. Was it just the fog, or was something out there that had spooking her sister. "Vanta..?" She asked, looking about herself in worry. "Where's mum?" She asked, voice slipping into a whisper. It was then she registered that Dread was with them too. Announcing himself with a declaration of a cougar ”A what!” she squeaked. How was she going to defend her siblings from a Cougar!

The startle of her brother's voice soft beside her ear made Vanta jump in alarm, having been unable to see him approach through the fog. "JUST A COUGAR?" Her shrill voice rang out a vast amount louder then Dread's soft words had been, and like the dinner bell had been rung, the cat leaped. Vanta - for the second time in her short life - made peace with her death in a shocky, beneath her breath repetitive mantra of 'we're gonna die, we're gonna die, we're gonna die!', turning tail and throwing herself to the side. Her paws aimed to shove both her siblings as she did so, the cougar leaping from the tree and taking the place she'd once stood with a growl.
Kite's arrival did little to lessen her panic, her young frame vibrating with fear as she shouted her reply. "Mom's vanished and we're all going to die!" She asserted to her sister, tears in her crystalline eyes. Vanta did not want her siblings to die, and if she ran... well, it would be the slowest of the pups to be eaten. What if that was her? What if it [i]wasn't/i] her? Swallowing hard, the pup squared up to meet the fierce cat - eyeing the glowing eyes through the fog. "You two should run!" The pup called to the others, not bothering to wait for a reply or confirmation or complaint before lunging into the fog to snap her jaws around the cat's thick wrist.

Before she knew it, Kite was hit in the shoulder by a sudden force. Her sight was wacky and unreliable and it took her a second to realise it was her sister hitting her. Her bravery wasn't lasting very well as she let out a shocked yelp of fright and surprise as she tumbled. It wasn't until she finished hitting the ground that she realised her sister had defended her. She scrambled to her paws before the cougar could take advantage of her compromised position, and found it staring them down. Her sister told them to run. Was she crazy? When in their lives had Kite ever left her sister to fend for herself?
She hissed, partly at Vanta for the suggestion and partly at the cougar. She puffed herself up and positioned herself next to her sister. "Go away, go away!" She yelled, making noise as she puffed up. Trying to make herself… alarming, or something to the danger. It took her a second to realise her sister wasn't beside her anymore she'd lunged for the cat! Quick to join in, Kite charged with a yowl and aimed for the other paw.

The fog continued to shift, disappearing the forms of her siblings from around her and forcing her to face the beast head on 'alone'. Except Kite's voice was clear in her ear, encouraging the cougar onward with yells to go away. Vanta chimed in with the scary noises, snapping and snarling and barking into the cat's face and punctuating it all with a firm "If you don't leave now, my dad will eat you!" for good measure.
She'd not been able to hold onto the paw long, one swing of the massive limb was enough to send her flying through the fog. By the time she rediscovered her paws, the glowing eyes had shifted away to focus instead upon Kite. "Leave my sister alone!" She yowled, galloping into the mist toward the glowing eyes, ducking her head and shutting her own eyes tight with the intention of slamming the entirety of her puppy weight into the cat's hard ribcage.

Even well being scared out of her wits, there was a sort of invulnerability to how Kite felt. She couldn’t actually get eaten by a cougar. Now matter how scary and immediate the threat was, right? Her puppy innocence shone through, believing that no matter what there would be a way out.
Her attack to the paw landed and she held on a few moments longer than her sister, bringing the cat’s attention to Kite. as it raised its paw, bringing her closer to its mouth, she let go with a startled squeak. At the same time, Vanta rocketed towards it, so Kite attempted a swipe at its collar for extra distraction.

The storm above begins to roar, the fog deepening until you can see no longer your partners in battle nor the foe itself. All that remains visible through the mists are the faintly glowing eyes as they disengage from the fight. The way they float backwards and up into the trees is deeply unsettling, and as they reach the canopy it seems their glow begins to somehow break apart. Dozens of fireflies scatter from where the gaze once watched you, disappearing into the mist as a strike of lightning cracks overhead.
Where the lightning strikes, the fog is violently parted. In the midst of it all is revealed a new and unique feature never before seen in these lands - the statue of a three headed wolf, standing proud upon a marble slab. Odder yet, the creatures tending to the statue go about their business as if nothing had changed. Like they had been there for ages and will be there for ages yet.
