Bonfire Resolutions

Autumn signals the coming winter and with it, the end of many life cycles across nature. As spring returns, it will come with new life, a new year, and you will be capable of the same growth and change. Reflect upon your habits, your faults, the things you wish you could change about yourself for the new year; in this ritualistic bonfire, the familiars invite you to let go of those faults in a ceremonial way.

Requirements:
Complete a 3+ round thread or a 800+ word solo centered around reflecting and acknowledging the things your character would like to change about themselves. Craft or bring along a special token that symbolizes what you are wanting to let go of, and while imagining that release, cast it into the Samhain flames at the Stone Steppe. Completed threads may be claimed for 45 skill points of your choice.

NPC:

As you cast the token of your father into the fire, it begins to flare and grow, consuming the gift of fuel in mere moments, it’s flames dancing before you.

With that sudden brightness you feel something inside yourself begin to lift, almost like a burden of guilt beginning to lighten. A voice sounds, one that sounds like your own but somehow is distinctly… not. ‘You are not your father’.

Inside your head the statement repeats and you feel that knowledge begin to settle over your shoulders, unrelenting. You almost feel like the fire is pleased with your sacrifice, but how can a fire be pleased?

NPC:

The idea of a resolution is explained to you and you seize on the idea. As you warm yourself by the fire you burn with a desire to learn, to grow, to expand who you are as a person.

Almost as if in response to your newfound desire, the fire seems to grow beside you. You feel its heat surrounding you and with it you feel your confidence begin to soar. You feel like you’ve already learned something new. Every day is one step forward, right?

You cast your offering into the flames and watch as it’s consumed, imagining hard what you’d like to change about yourself and hoping beyond hope that some higher power out there is listening. Perhaps that’s your downfall - maybe you should be focusing on accepting yourself and your disability, and not wishing it vanished.

As the exercise draws to a close and you (unfortunately) realize your disability still remains, you feel that hope and excitement begin to die like the fires before you. You’re sadder than you were when you arrived, and more then that, it’s like you’re missing something.

NPC:

The sheeps skin is soft and the fire is warm. The comfort gives you time to reflect, to consider the life you’ve led as well as the one you want.

As you consider the prospect of stepping outside of your comfort zone, a feeling of certainty seeps into your bones. You feel like you’re on the right track. You toss the sweetgrass into the flames and the sweet burning smell fills the air. With it comes the scent of snow and evergreen trees on the cusp of a cold winter's day. A strange scent to take from a fire, but maybe you understand what it means?

NPC:

As you finally settle a distance from the flames, you realize you have much to reflect on. Children and Gods burn across your thoughts, unrelenting and repetitive.

You feel a decision forming inside of you, and as you decide to cast your fate into your own paws you feel something fall into them. Surprised, you open your eyes to a strange, oily black paw. Looking at it gives you an unsettling feeling. A bad omen? Or a good one?

NPC:

Even as you turn to go back to your nephew, even as you hang your head you feel the warmth still, soft and gentle and naggingly familiar. It is slow to fade from you as you walk, it lingers and seems to seep inside you, past your fur and flesh, past the muscles that move your body, and into your blood. It flows through your veins as if pumped by your heart. You get the feeling that the warmth is coming from the crystal you threw into the flames, from the blood that has long since evaporated from its surface.

It's as if the warmth is trying to tell you that you also get to define your name, because it does not belong to one single wolf but many and each has a right to define what it means for them. The warmth stays with you, even as you walk away from the fire, even as you return to a place that is not home.

Your viper companion alerts you to a small pouch on the wayside as you walk, and you realize it's like the ones you'd seen others leaving parts of the celebration with, how did it get all the way out here? You peer inside to find a small black misshapen object, a paw?

NPC:

Your back is to the fire, the heat of it everpresent on your spine even if you cannot see the flame. It is a steady presence beside you as you prepare your resolution token.

In your paws you form a kitty made from straw, and you imbue it with all your bad feelings. All the little things you wish to burn away. You lead your sister to the fire, and together, you cast in your creations.

The bonfire flares, taking in the sacrifice. You feel a little better, as if some of the bad had burned away with the kitty. You move to take a step away and almost trip over a bag on the ground. A bag that you're sure hadn’t been there a moment ago. Hey, didn't Kite just drop something?

You are glad to be here with your brother and you think of the things you want as you prepare to throw your wooden trinket to the flame. A little bit of height, and a way to help your brother learn and grow.

There is such hope in you as you toss it, but clearly you were just a bit too distracted. Your balance is poor, and as you make the motion to toss you instead stumble and fall … right beside the fire. Phew! Could have been a lot worse!

It’s hard to think past your self-doubt. You hold those bitter things close to you, even feel them as you clutch your grass figure. It’s a representation of yourself, and you prepare to cast it (and maybe a part of yourself) into the flames.

You reflect on the importance of letting go of that self-doubt and fear but they cling to you… and you know you aren’t ready. The token touches the flames, and the green fire flickers brighter. Unfortunately, you find you don’t feel any better. In fact, reflecting on all that pain has just brought it closer to the surface.

As you toss your wicker figurine into the flames, the green fire begins to swell. Watching it grow you focus harder upon your desire to kindle a deeper commitment to the women you love.

The feeling of confidence and certainty in you grows with the flames. You already know what you want, and how to achieve it. You walk away from the bonfire smiling, with a lucky trinket in your paw.
