Azure was... disappointed. It seemed everything disappointed him lately, from the lack of improvement of his heir to the pack's dreadful loss against the pirates in the raid. Azure had lost the tip of his tail but more than that, he'd lost pride in what was his. How had they lost?. At one point the Armada could boast the strongest warriors in all the land and now? They had gotten their asses kicked by a group half their size. The same group Az had nearly taken out single handedly in one day.

There were going to be changes - Gossamer with her new promotion would have a long job ahead of her - but to begin with, Azure fully intended to get the members of his pack back in fighting shape. Perhaps they had grown lazy secluded in the north or just had a day of bad luck, but whatever the reason he needed another one-on-one to properly judge. Throwing his head back, Azure called for any warrior who felt they could pose for him a challenge. Someone to prove that the Armada was not growing weak, as some might soon believe.

"Speech"

The raid had been a cluster fuck of mistakes and Keahi had been one of them. Since her loss, the red woman had gotten the wound on her face stitched closed but the scars it will leave will forever serve as a reminder of her failings. A dark cloud has come over the tropical woman and she has avoided Ruga as if he was the plague. Part of her fears that he will think she is ugly now that her face is scarred and she does not give him the chance to reject her. Patrolling has become her life and, the further out she can go, the better.

A call rings through pack rings for a warrior to come prove themselves and the woman’s red paws falter. Keahi almost considers not answering the call, feeling that she does not have the right to call herself a warrior. Not now, not ever again. But, in the end, she makes her way to where the Warlord waits and comes to a stop a short distance away from Azure. Turning her ocean blue gaze up to him, she softly says, “I will take your challenge.”

Determination blazes in her eyes even as her stitched up face throbs in contradiction. Her white polar bear armor covers her chest and part of her back while the dagger Ruga had gifted her is firmly in place against her right foreleg. Keahi shifts her legs, settling down into a defensive stance, while pinning her ears back, narrowing her eyes, and pulling her lips back. No matter what, the red woman is determined to prove herself… even if it is only to herself.

"Keahi Mogotsi"

A challenger did arrive, though not one of his ranked warriors as he had hoped might answer the call. It was not as disappointing as he thought it might be - his diplomat had ambition and drive and had shown herself in the raid to defend their home even though it was not one of her primary duties. Unfortunately she had failed her own fight, but as Azure and the others had too.. well, he couldn't judge her for it.

A frown tugged at his lips as he eyed her new scar, his own maimed tail twitching in annoyance. Many of his wolves had taken injury that day and he hadn't been able to protect them. The only thing that made that knowledge less painful to accept was that Sirius had been equally incapable. Perhaps the Armada had just had a bad day or perhaps they needed more training. Whatever the reason, hopefully Keahi's efforts would make it clear to him today.

"Prepare yourself." He acknowledged her, skipping past a conversational greeting to get right to the point. Remorse pushed him to consider an apology for the mark upon her face and his role in leading them to failure, and keeping things professional would at least prevent him from grovelling.

Once he was sure the diplomat was prepared for the coming combat, Azure pushed off toward her. He angled his head to try and grab a shallow bite behind her jaw, avoiding the fresh sewn wounds of her face intentionally. At the same time his right forelimb reached forward, the mutated paw moving to attempt to swipe behind her heel to unbalance her.

Keahi does not blame anyone for her scar. No, she knows full-well that her own fighting inadequacies are to blame. If anything, the red woman is embarrassed that she let her Warlord down and she came here, wishing to prove that she is a good fighter. Stepping up and accepting the challenge, Azure tells her to prepare and she gives him a sharp dip of her head in acknowledgment before settling into a defensive stance. Once ready, she takes a deep breath, steadies her nerves, and signals her readiness.

Azure is quick to charge, closing the distance in the blink of an eye and angling in for an attack. Keahi prides herself on being calm and cool under pressure, it is a skill any good diplomat needs; however, when she realizes he intends to bite her jaw, the red woman feels the icy grip fear suddenly squeeze her heart. Instinctively, her weight shifts into her hind end and she raises off the ground, avoiding the bite but leaving her wide open to his paw that knocks her off balance.

Anger swiftly replaces the fear, the ice burning away in the face of a roaring fire. Keahi hates how bad she is at fighting; how incompetent she is at defending her home and those she considers family. A mighty snarl rips past her lips and, unbalanced and teetering on back legs, she lashes out with teeth and paws at the Warlord’s face. She aims to hit anything and everything she can. Fuck it. If she going down, she is going to give him a reason to remember her.

"Keahi Mogotsi"

The smell of fear was unmistakable as Azure leaned in to grasp behind her jaw and for a moment, the Warlord's resolve faltered. Her front end lifted up and away from his bite and Az uncharacteristically did not seek to chase it, instead recoiling and changing tactics to one more defensive. What reason did one of his pack members have to fear him in a simple spar? It was baffling to the man, but he had very little time to think on it before the snarl of outrage rang out and Keahi lashed out once more.

Her paws came toward his face and Az reacted on instinct, snapping out with his teeth in an attempt to catch the wrist in his jaws behind his sabers - hopefully trapping the paw there, so that he might be able to twist his head and use it to return her front end to the ground. Her teeth came next and Az was too preoccupied on the paw he sought to dodge them, instead lifting his own opposite paw and attempting to bring it over toward her muzzle to wrap his curved claws around the bridge of her nose and try to pull the teeth away.

"Speech"

The Warlord seems to be going easy on her as Keahi panics and lefts away from the bite. Uncharacteristically, he does not follow after her and, for a moment, a deep, almost unfathomable, shame pounds into her chest. It is difficult for her to think that her Warlord may think less of her now that she is scarred and his snarl of outrage forces the shame to course hotly through her veins; burning the tropical woman from the inside out.

Keahi lashes out with teeth and paws, trying to prove that she is worthy, that she can fight, and that she is not a failure. If Azure looks at her differently after this spar, the red woman is uncertain if she could remain in his presence. Ah, but right now, there is a fight to contend with. He catches her wrist just behind his sabers and she growls in frustration at her own failings. Teeth flash for his face and he uses his opposite paw to swing at her muzzle while pulling her back to the earth with her wrist.

Shit, this is not going well. Keahi shifts tactics, aiming her teeth toward the paw swinging toward her face. She attempts to bite the soft pad there, aware of the claws that hide inside but not caring anymore. Maybe she can draw a stalemate and force the Warlord to back off. Oh, how she hates how weak has become.
