not strong enough

Though it'd been awhile now since Ashen had officially moved, Spirit had only really begun to really explore their new territories. Change wasn't his favorite, never had been, which was ironic considering how unstable most of his life had been. He'd just been starting to settle down in his new home when they'd upped and moved - but it wouldn't deter him too much. It wasn't like he'd really gotten to know any of his packmates yet anyway. Being social was even less easy for him than dealing with change. Not that he didn't like the company of others, he just didn't really know how to handle it most of the time.
Saddlebag draped over his shoulder, he set out to scale down the ravine. Somewhere overhead his finch friend Strawberry was singing a sweet song, clearly enthralled with spring's arrival. Though he hadn't been initially pleased they were moving further west, afraid the lands might be more desolate here, he was surprised when he started to get a good look at the ravine. This cut of earth seemed more fertile than the surrounding lands and he was eager to explore them and see what kind of plants he could find. Spirit was slow and cautious as he descended, further than he had before, intending on making a real effort of mapping out as much of the ravine as possible today.

Renegade was getting older, and he was excited to go out today with his new companions. A baby owl, and an ocelot kitten. The little golden feathered owl blinked with her bright curious eyes, but she hid against Renegade’s neck. Her little feet clasping her wolf’s scruff quills to keep her balance instead of digging her talons into his shoulders. The kitten raced alongside the puppy, no thought of the difference in species getting in the way of their friendship. The ocelot was likely abandoned by its mother because of the strange paws, but he’d been rescued by Venom and practically raised by her squirrel. Which made for an interesting cat.
They were exploring the ravine right now, their den was at the mouth of it so this was the place that Ren knew the best. The sound of a happy singing bird caught the boy’s attention. He was usually nocturnal and didn’t get to hear songbirds very often. Not unless he snuck out after bedtime or was allowed to watch the sun rise. He was older now though, and that meant more freedom and a little responsibility. The young prince was patrolling around the palace, thrilled at his very first day shift.
However excited, he had a job to do, and didn’t take long to find Spirit scouting the same area. Curiosity had the better of him as he spied the bag over the man’s shoulder. With his head tilted slightly in question, "What’cha doin?” He asked in innocent puppy fashion despite how grown up he wanted to be. His ivory speckled tail wagged at his hips.
"Renegade Klein"

Spirit was rarely ever displeased with the prospect of company, but he hadn't been anticipating it either. The presence of another - no, a few others - seemingly startled him at first. His eyes widened as the boy approached, gaze drifting from him to his kitten companion to the bird that clung to the Prince's neck. The variety of species wasn't something he'd question, not when his own finch companion was easily his closest friend. As if sensing his anxiety, Strawberry's song quieted and she drifted down to a lower spot in the trees, perching close by.
"H-hello," he stammered out quietly. His nervousness was not constrained to wolves who were older than him, clearly - and no amount of trying to seem calm and collected had ever been able to tame his stutter, so he no longer tried. "I w-was hoping to see what kind of herbs grew here in the ravine." As nervous as he was to finally begin to get to know his packmates, he hoped too he could return to learning more about healing, something that had been put on the backburner for so long now. "M-my name is Spirit, by the way. A-and that's Strawberry," he searched the treetops above until he found her, a splash of vivid red against the green leaves of the trees, and gestured up to her. "W-what are you doing?"

Curiously Renegade approached the older man, probably not being very polite with the three pairs of eyes staring at the timid healer. At least with their youth the rudeness could be excused. Spirit was much more polite than the unruly prince as he offered a hello to begin with. Ren didn’t reveal his curiosity at the man’s nervous nature, as he’d never interacted with anyone with such little self confidence. Still, he answered the question the boy asked and the prince perked up with interest about the herbs. He was one of the few younger wolves with an interest in plants. Apparently just like his Grandmother.
"Oh! I can show you some herbs!” He offered a bit too excitedly before he caught himself. He tried to settle himself and be more princely. "Sorry.. I’m Renegade, this is Minerva.” He tilted his head to reveal the little owlet. "And Revolver,” He gestured to the kitten who raised a dexterous paw in greeting. "It’s good to meet you,” he offered a grin. "I’m on my first patrol!” He explained proudly. "It’s not been very exciting so far.”

If anything, the unabashed attention was comforting rather than overwhelming. Spirit didn't like guessing whether or not someone was watching him, or paying attention to him... he'd much rather just know and be prepared for whatever interaction he might be facing. He noted the younger boy's interest light up almost immediately when he spoke of looking for herbs, and he felt some of his nervousness begin to ebb away. At least when talking about something like herbs and healing he could focus on that entirely rather than his own shortcomings or fears.
"N-nice to meet you all," Spirit started, letting the faintest hint of a smile touch his lips. "I-I'd love to join you and find some herbs if we have time," he suggested. Sure, Renegade was much younger than him but he'd been presumably born and raised here and no doubt knew the lands better than he did, with more formal training than he'd been given. Spirit wouldn't underestimate the little healer, not for a second. "P-patrolling can be boring, but it's important," I think, he thought to himself silently. It wasn't something he'd ever had to do personally though.
