Rain had thoroughly soaked the vast continent as Geist traveled without any particular direction or destination in mind. Snowmelt and spring showers combined had caused the rivers and lakes to swell, making it more difficult for him to find any sort of dry shelter. While the weather was a lot warmer now than it had been in a few months, the winds that promised more storms seemed to blow right through him. A lonely set of paw prints in the muddy soil betrayed his presence here. Geist sought protection from the elements as he neared the base of a hill that yawned open into a cave. In his path lie an old rotten tree trunk, he lowered his head to sniff it finding no discernible scent except stale field mouse. Swiftly he leapt over the trunk and made his way to the cave entrance.

Stalactites loomed above him like teeth and the shadows began to swallow his dark pelt as he ventured further. Noticing the cave narrowed to a tunnel further ahead, he decided not to go any further. White ears listened for a moment to make sure he was alone before he began sniffing around for a place to lie down. With a brief stretch, muscles sore from his long hike here, he settled down in a little divot in the earth. White nose tucked under black and white forepaws he drifted to sleep.

It was morning once more when he found consciousness again. The nights were still chilly and the temperature had dropped yet again. His whole body shivered and protested his efforts as he struggled to get to his paws.
”I thought we were over this cold weather crap.” he groaned to himself. The sound of rocks clattering outside the den caught his attention. He thought something must have heard him. His shivers subdued enough for him to walk, or rather, sneak toward the mouth of the cave. Sunlight barely penetrated the cloud cover, but there was still enough light out to see. The mostly barren landscape offered few places to hide, but having been asleep for a while surely something would have had time to sneak up on him. The black and white male remained silent waiting to hopefully see what was there before making a move.
