It had been about a week since the raid, the chickens had been kept in a temporary quarantine pen adjacent to the airlock pen that would hopefully eventually become their home. With his bungalow right by it, he had been keeping half an eye on the birds himself. After Sid's check up, he gestured for the girl to join him as he slipped into the pen. There was a sour smell in the air and a few of the chickens seemed to be foaming at the beak. Others sounded like they were snickering and had occasional bubbles coming out of their nostrils. and those that seemed to escape the prior two infections seemed to have black, pus-filled sores on the bottoms of their feet, no doubt bought on by the wet weather of Auster.
Sakana sighed and gestured for his monkey to grab one of the birds. There were 10 in all, and the rooster was still housed separately for now. He wasn't looking forward to checking that one out. “Wanna help me with this lot? Bit different from our usual patients but practice is practice.” He asked the pastel coated girl. Of course he would understand if her answer was no. This lot were in a bad way indeed and their condition clearly preceded their arrival here. Some of the birds were barely hanging on.

Sid seemed a little flat and not at all her usual cheery self, so he was hoping chasing the birds to round them up would serve as a distraction. “We'll try t' get them better first, but breathing stuff can be tricky wi' birds and we don' wann'em gettin' the wild birds sick too. If we have t' kill'em, it won't be for lack of tryin' t' save 'em. We can probably still use the feathers for other things if we dust 'em down t' deal with any lice.” His blonde monkey had gathered up one of the birds that was too weak to get away from it while Sakana set up three separate baskets with lids to sort the birds based on ailments.
Sakana listened to the bird breath for a moment then gestured for Blondie to open it's beak, taking a tentative sniff and almost hurling all over the poor beastie. “Oh gods thats awful!” The brown wolf recoiled visibly. With the monkey's hand across the birds swollen croup, foul smelling foam was leaking from the back of the chickens beak. “Wanna sniff?” He teased Siduri before gesturing to one of the baskets. Good lord, how on earth were they going to deal with this?

Sakana smiled when Sid shook her head and nodded when she asked if they wouldn't be better off just killing it. “Its 'n important part o' bein' a healer t'know when giving someone a quick death is th' best option.” he conceded. “Unfortunately, y'probably right about this one, but we'll split em up based on their problems an' go from there.”
As to how they got into this state? “I suspect that's one fungal, with all th' rain down in Auster it'd be a challenge ter clean th' pens sufficiently t' make sure they couldn't get ter anythin' spoiled.” He gestured to one of the chickens with wounded legs next. “I'd wager somethin' nasty got inter th' skin through a scrape an' thats a nasty infection, I dunno quite how t' best treat their skin, its so different from a wolf.” One of the distant chickens sneezed, “That though, 's a bit more worrying, I imagine that's contagious, so we should probably leave them in this pen, and move th' others over to Jael's pen, and separate them with the airlock... if we can save any o' them at all...”
He shrugged, it was a bitter revelation that Sid had almost gotten her throat ripped out and cracked her skull for chickens that probably wouldn't see the week out. He'd happily let her have a bit of fun with anything that had to be culled as a consolation, but they'd have to sort them out first.
