race the tide

The tide was starting to roll in, the waves lapping over Ronan's paws as he stood on the land bridge. If he was quick he'd probably be able to beat the waves before they swallowed the Bifrost, saving him having to wait out the cycle and linger in Auster longer than he'd like. Not that he'd found anything terrible enough to make him to want to leave now but... He had his reasons, ones he wasn't quick to share. Despite his bulk and bordering stupidly muscular build, he was a lot faster than he looked. He was confident he could make it if he pushed himself, but was it worth the effort? |

It was time to go back to Boreas for a little bit. She wanted to get away from all the rain that had been harassing Auster all season, and wanted a change of pace. There was so much in Boreas she hadn't seen, and had only been there less than a handful of times for brief trips. But now? She was old enough to be able to defend herself and handle her own. Now? Nothing could stop her! She ambled toward the Bifrost, amber gaze noting the tide seemed to be getting higher. Did the water really overtake it? Was it possible to be stranded in Auster with no way across until the tide went down? It wasn't something she had considered before, but hey, if she ever got caught up in it, she was a pretty strong swimmer! She wasn't sure how strong should the ocean decide to try and rough her up, but she was sure she could manage for the most part. A grunt from her new companion shifted her focus, and when she looked up, she spotted a body that she recognized. It was the guy she had tussled with in the Boneyard! She could never forget his face, he looked pretty cool after all! continuing forward, she grunted a greeting to alert him of her presence. While they weren't what you'd call friends |

Ronan side eyed the polar bear, so they met again. He grunted in return, a low noise in his throat as with a flick of his snout he gestured to the land bridge ahead. Slowly but surely being swallowed by the waves, each rolling up further than those that came before. He'd seen her fight and knew full well she was more than capable of it, but how good were bears at running? Time to find out, he supposed, unless she wanted to stick around in these parts for longer. They didn't have much time, it was now or... a few hours later. Kicking off into a sprint, glittering sand was flung into the air as he rushed into motion. Wings tucking tight against her shoulders, a straight line to reduce wind resistance, they had to be fast but mindful of their stamina too since the Bifrost wasn't exactly short either. |

He seemed to be a man of few words. Which honestly, was fine by her. As she got older, she was starting to become a little more reserved. A little less talkative. Or maybe it was just an adult thing? She wasn't sure. She enjoyed talking to her family, but these days, it was more action over talk. So when Ronan grunted back at her in acknowledgment, the smallest hint of a smile tugged at her lips as she lumbered closer. He gestured toward the path ahead. The only path they had to get to the other side. Sure, she could easily swim across...but even with her size and strength, it likely wasn't a good idea to try and fight the tide. Much less with no land between Auster and Boreas. She was likely to drown from exhaustion before she ever made it across. And that definitely wasn't a fate she wanted to meet anytime soon. She quietly nodded to him, her muscles tensing as she fluidly moved from her usually slow lumber to picking up speed. Good thing she had, because Ronan kicked off, sending sand spraying behind him. She raced behind, giant paws eating up the sand as she left divets in her wake. The salty sea air filled her lungs as she ran, her legs stretching more than they ever stretched before as she sought to catch up to the more agile wolf. Ronan was under no delusion that she wouldn't be able to keep pace. Bears were all muscle and she was no exception, paws thudding loud enough for his ears to catch the sound over the rolling waves. His lungs burned as he pushed hard, the finishing line so distant it almost felt futile, but he knew what his body was capable of and shrugged off the discomfort. He could make it, they both could. His paws fell in tandem, a hasty beat of one to four, over and over; the sand getting progressively more saturated with seawater as they pressed on. They were cutting it close, the bridge was starting to flood, instead of kicking up sand they were charging through water as it rose to their ankles. Slowing their progress, making each step all the more of a push, but still pressing on all the same. |

Her eyes were on the goal ahead. Which...now that she thought about it, seemed very far away. Paws thundered across the sand, but she didn't realize just how quickly the tide was coming up and swallowing the only path they had to get across. It wasn't until saltwater started to splash her face and she felt the drag against her feet that she realized it. She glanced down to find the sea water had risen up to their ankles (or was it her ankles and higher up his legs?), either way, they were in an ominous position and they had to get across as quickly as possible. Pushing on, she pushed herself even faster, surging forward as the water threatened to drag her down. Wipe her feet out from under her. She crashed through the tide like a freight train, lungs burning. Legs burning. Heart racing. The wind howling against her ears. The sea spray against her face. Her thicker fur doing well to repel all but the water that now surrounded her lower legs. Each breath out, an audible grunt was released along with it. They'd make it to the other side. And if they didn't? Well, she'd make sure they both made it no matter what.
