A Little Bit of Beauty in an Ugly Place

A gentle breeze sifted through the long, wheaten grasses of the plain. The grass was tall enough to shield many animals and, as Rees moved through the plain, she could hear things both big and small scurrying through the underbrush. The horse was unafraid. Why? Wasn't she just as likely as the deer around her to be run down and eaten by the predators that she could smell on the wind? No. No, she wasn't as likely.
Within the russet mare's mouth were your typical horse teeth, but there was a surprise as well. Cerise had grown the teeth of a wolf, her canines long and curved. Perfect for piercing the flesh of any who might be stupid enough to hunt her. If the teeth weren't enough, protruding from the woman's silver mane were twin antlers akin to those of an elk. She could use them too. The strand of predator teeth draped around her long neck were proof of that.
Feeling little fear, the mare lowered her muzzle to one of the various streams, her velvety nose quivering slightly as she scented the water before allowing her lips to touch it. Rees slaked her thirst, water droplets clinging to her lips as she stood tall once more. Inhaling deeply, the ruby lady released a searching neigh out across the plain. It had been such a long time since she'd come across another horse. Her solitary existence was a lonely one.
