tears of salt, heart of stone
Cambria

The raft was water logged, barely afloat, bogging down under the weight of both of them. Exhausted, frustrated, and ready to see dry land, Idris' eyes widened suddenly. His dry mouth opened, tongue hanging out, the rasp his lungs obvious. Salt water logged fur sticks out in hideous fashion and he's sure that he's starting to hallucinate. Just as much as he's trying to paddle them to somewhere that isn't Caran, he also has to ensure that Cambria doesn't drown either. He takes up too much of the raft, this much he knows, but he won't tell her as such. Let her believe she's an inconvenience, at least he'll get to hear her sweet voice apologize one more time. And though his brain is trying to convince him that the bright yellow sand in front of them is an illusion, it's not. Suddenly, the raft slams into the shore and he's nearly jolted off of it and into the water. The loud 'oof' that leaves him in dry and irritated. Slipping into the shallows, barely knee deep, he turns to Cambria with a look of disdain. "Let's go," the rumbling words are short, quick, before he's turning to the thin strip of sand. From what he can see, it's still a bit of a walk before they even hit the shade. Further disgruntled by this realization, he doesn't check to see if Cambria is following before he starts moving forward toward the main shore. |

How long had they been out at sea? Night and day had come and gone. Had they come and gone more than once? In the frantic scramble to depart, Cambria's mind had become a blur. It was only when she saw smoke on the horizon that she realized what was happening. Everything was gone. It was well and truly gone. While Idris paddled the boat out into the sea, the tabby coated fae watched the burning village until she could see it no more.
Cambria had curled herself into as tight of a ball as she could manage, taking up as little space as possible. She had learned to give Idris and Matija space and she did so now reflexively. Idris was the type to lash out, so Bria did everything in her power to keep herself from being a target for his ire. Where was Matija? Had it bothered her to leave Matija behind? Yes. Yes it had. Not only because she was attached to the man, but because, without him, Idris would be more irritable, more prone to growling and raging. They wouldn't have left him behind without a reason. Surely he would be joining them at some point.
Lips were cry and cracked and the fae's body was screaming for water by the time their raft collided with sand. The sudden jolt brought the barest sound of discomfort from Cambria. Her entire body was stiff and aching from being curled up for so long. At a command from Idrid, the woman unfurled her leggy body and slid into the water. Paws hit sand and it took her a moment to regain her land legs. Long limbs cut through the water as she made her way to dry land. Dry... too dry. She needed a drink badly.
Head lowered in exhaustion, dehydration and more than a bit of defeat, Bria followed Idris as he had commanded. Where they were going, she didn't quite know. Not that it mattered anyway. Where she went in life wasn't up to her at all. Nope, not in the slightest.

He could leave her in the dark. Could hold the silence over her head, force her to become anxious wondering all the questions that were probably driving her mad by now. It would be too nice of him to give her any information, but he worried for Matija just the same as she did. Was he okay? Had he survived? Would he be able to find them? His own heart raced for the wellbeing of his brother that it clouded his mind as he led the girl across the sand bars. "Don't drink this water," he says suddenly, his own voice dry and gruff, any words making his throat hurt more. He wants water as badly as she does, but he knows this is still saltwater or its at least brackish which still isn't safe. If she truly wanted to drink it, she would regret it later. Both from whatever her bowls would do and what he would do to her for not listening. Stopping for a moment on the crest of a larger sand bar with one or two palms and some large boulders to rest against, Idris looks around. He has no idea where they are or where to head to either. To his right, there's another bay and from the position of the sun, he can only guess that's north. So when he looks to his left and sees more water and sandbars, he safely assumes it's south. And to his front? It had to be west and honestly the most promising out of the other directions. Large, old mangroves rise above sea level, offering the only protection that they might find. Was this entire place all tropical? Letting out another grunt, Idris flicks his tail, motioning for Cambria to follow. "Once we get to the trees, we can stop," Idris rumbles, already getting tired of the sand and water. Something solid and cooler would be nice. |

Idris walked before her, telling her not to drink the brackish water. Cambria wrinkled her nose when he couldn't see. Of course she knew not to drink the water. She wasn't stupid. In fact, before the woman had been... commandeered... she had been considered to be gifted by her family's teachers. Remembering such things made Cambria's head hurt, so she gave her skull a shake and trudged on after Idris.
Matija was somewhere else and Bria found it easier to think about where the grey brute might be rather than think about her past. The past was cloudy, covered by a thick veil of fog. Trying to clear that fog gave the woman headaches, so it was easier to just focus on something else. Matija. She knew that he'd been left behind to burn down the village. How would he find them? The world was such a huge place. She hadn't heard the two conspiring about a destination, so how would he know?
Idris' voice pulled her back to the present and she looked at his back end, you know... because he was walking in front of her. The woman didn't reply, she simply nodded even though he wouldn't see, and continued walking. Up ahead thick, gnarled trees shot up from the land and she wished that they were already shielded by them. The sun beat down hard, soaking into her dark coat and forcing the fae to pant in order to keep cool. Gods above... her tongue felt like the very sand that they walked on.

The sun is hot, even during what should be Autumn. Beating down on his white coat, warming and drying his fur in all the wrong places. Exhausted, hungry, and agitated that they have to walk through all this sand and water just to get somewhere, Idris isn't in the mood for games. And because he's walking in front of Cambria, he doesn't see her head nod, but rather believes she's ignoring him. Her silence sends a trigger of irritation through him. His fur bristles suddenly, paws digging into the sand to force his large body to stop. Ears flatten and lips pull up in a sneer with a second. Whirling on the girl, he lowers his head closer to her level. Lunging toward her, he snaps his teeth next to her muzzle, a threatening gesture. "When I speak, I expect you to respond. Yes, sir. No, sir. Am I clear?" Idris seethes, a growl vibrating in his chest as he keeps his face as close to hers as possible. |

Could a wolf become one with the ground beneath them? The moment that Idris whirled on her, Cambria's legs ceased doing their job and she dropped to the ground, tail tucking up against her belly and ears plastering to her skull. A soft whimper pulled from her as massive jaws snapped next to her face. She'd felt those teeth more than once and didn't want to feel them again. The former princess had little pride left, so when Idris insisted, she replied with, "Y-yes sir."
Only when his lips slid back into place and his posture was less domineering and terrifying did Cambria even breathe. The striped ball of fur turned back into a wolf, lightly shaking the sand from her coat before following quietly after the brute like a shadow. It was almost always like this and Bria had accepted that this was her life. She didn't remember much from before Idris and Matija.
