Ysmir was new within the pack and he wanted to make certain no one doubted his ability to pull his own weight. He wasn’t a layabout, and he was eager to help provide for his distant relatives. There were many new mouths to feed now, so the man worked to arrange a hunt. He was still getting used to the prey that lived here in the northern reaches but he figured he and another wolf could easily take down a dall sheep. Such an animal would provide much for the pack, its hide would be soft and supple and the meat would last for many meals. The difficult part was getting another wolf, who wouldn’t have any idea who he was, on a hunt with him.

Krah was at his side, the silver fox would be helpful at the end of the hunt but she wasn’t great at the chase. Barenziah flew above him, her sharp eyes already working on tracking their intended beast.

Maelstrom is a pup. That much is true, but his eagerness to learn is beyond his years. Already, his legs are long and quickly building muscle. By dawn, he is out, roaming the territory, exploring and finding new things to discover. New animals to hunt. He is finding his passion and has found the excitement in chasing down an animal.

When the request for a hunting partner was offered, Maelstrom took the opportunity. Perhaps it would be more of a test for Ysmir rather than himself, but the pup wouldn’t question it. Didn’t care to question it as long as he learned something.

Approaching the dark colored wolf, Maelstrom looks up at Ysmir with his vibrant violet eyes. “I’m your partner for today,” he speaks plainly, a sort of cheeky smile on his youthful face as he watches for a reaction from the older wolf.

Ysmir sat back on his haunches, not having to wait very long until a gangly pup appeared before him. All heart and no experience, Ysmir couldn’t help the crooked grin that played over his mute features. Ysmir nodded his head appropriately, not uttering a word. He gestured with his features up upon a hill where a flock of dall sheep were grazing the sparse spring grasses. The wind was in their favor, however there wasn’t much cover between here and their position.

Being mute he could give no further instruction, though Krah was there in case the boy had pressing questions. His gyrfalcon was soaring above them, ready to give any information that might pertain to the hunt. All three creatures quite peckish and ready for some mutton, or lamb if they could get their paws on a younger animal.

With another gesture Ysmir went to get the hunt started, doing his best to lead them up the hill under cover so they could get closer before running the herd, or sneaking an attack.

Thankfully, Maelstrom isn't... oblivious. Though he wants to ask why the man isn't speaking, he knows this isn't the time for such things. His gaze follows up the sloping hill toward the flock of sheep that graze. Watching for a few moments, Maelstrom takes notes of the males, females, and younger lambs. There were options, some good and some not. Still young and quite inexperienced, he's not sure how capable the other wolf is as a hunter either. He was still willing to give it a go.

Nodding in agreement, Maelstrom quietly followed after Ysmir. Falling into line directly behind the midnight cloaked male, he tried his best to put his paws in the same place as Ysmir's so that it would only appear as one wolf tracking the sheep. It would also help dampen his steps as the ground was already imprinted from the heavier male's steps. Doing their best to stay under cover and down wind, Maelstrom watches as they draw closer to the flock until they get somewhere where they can hide and ready for their attack.

"How about that lamb or ewe over there on the edge?" Maelstrom speaks quietly, his gaze lingering on an ewe and her lamb that grazed near the outskirts of the flock.

"Maelstrom"

Despite his silence it seems the young wolf has enough sense to follow what Ysmir communicates to him. Not that following a glance and a gesture were too difficult, but still. The boy nodded in understanding, speaking without words was invaluable when hunting, and the two of them made their way closer to the flock. The boy also had the same thought that Ysmir did. A young animal, or perhaps an older ewe, he would say as much in a hushed whisper as they reached their vantage point.

Better to decide a target first, then attack. Those who chased two rabbits caught none. His gaze followed that of the boy’s to where a ewe and lamb were away from the flock. Usually that meant there was something going on with the ewe. If they caught her, they would essentially catch the lamb. Ysmir gave a swift nod, and they would begin.

Ysmir left their cover with a swiftness that didn’t look like he could possess. He slunk low to the ground until he was spotted by another of the flock. All of the sheep took flight, but Ysmir was already between the ewe and the rest of the sheep. She had nowhere to go.
