The scent of betrayal lingered in the cold night air. Oath’s crimson eyes burned with fury as he crouched low, his two hawks circling high above, scouting for any movement along the treacherous paths of the Delta. It had been days since he heard the whispers about a group of wolves spotted moving suspiciously across the land: wolves from the same pack that had overtaken Judila, the same ones now rumored to have his brother, Abaddon.

His heart tightened, fury blending with fear. His brother was strong, but forced into slavery? Oath gritted his teeth at the thought. No one had the right to break Abaddon like that. He had to act fast before they traded his brother off, leaving him lost to some unknown fate. He’d seen enough suffering.

A soft flutter of wings drew his attention. His hawks had found them. One of the red-tailed companions swooped down toward Oath, its mauve plumage glowing faintly in the moonlight, leading him in the direction of the enemy convoy. They were close now.

They had been walking for days with little rest, stopping only when the transporters needed to. Two wolves wore a rope cross ways around their torsos, a longer line leading from each of them to a smaller wolf between them, the ropes affixed to a makeshift muzzle wound snugly around their face that loops around the back of their head for stability. More ropes kept his pace short, only allowing each step a few inches of space, no where near a full stride should he try to make a run for it, but given the days of travel in the heat with little food or water, it was clear the smaller wolf didn't have the energy to try and run.

It became glaringly obvious when he collapsed in the sand, warm still even in the night. The two that were leashed to him hadn't noticed his collapse until the rope pulled taught, but they weren't making moves to help him. Instead, they barked at him, commanded him to stand but he couldn't. The summer air was warm still, despite the darkness, yet because the rope muzzle he couldn't pant. That didn't stop the rapid rise and fall of his chest however, the little sounds of short and quick breaths being the only sign of life. The transporters didn't care however, instead one grabbed their end of the rope and yanked harshly to the side, dragging the weak boy through the sand a bit as his neck uncomfortably craned in the direction the rope was pulled. "Get up, whore," the other transporter barked as he strode over and grabbed Abaddon by the scruff, attempting to set him on his paws just for him to crumple into the sand once again.

Oath moved swiftly through the darkness, his eyes fixed on the distant figures illuminated by the pale glow of the moon. His heart pounded in his chest as he crept closer, watching the two transporters and the smaller wolf they dragged between them. The sight of his brother, Abaddon, collapsed in the sand, his body limp and broken, sent a surge of fury through Oath’s veins.

His hawks had circled back, reporting what he had already feared: Abaddon was too weak to continue. The sound of the transporters’ cruel laughter, the vile commands they barked at his brother, echoed in Oath’s ears, tightening the knot of rage deep inside him. He could hear the ragged, desperate breaths from Abaddon, the ropes that bound him cutting into his skin. Oath’s teeth clenched.

There was no time to waste.

With a sharp whistle, Oath signaled his hawks to strike. The birds swooped down from above, their talons raking through the air as they attacked the transporters, diving at their eyes and wings beating furiously. The sudden onslaught caused chaos, forcing the wolves to flinch and stumble back, distracted by the vicious birds.

Oath sprang into action, moving like a shadow through the sand, his eyes locked on the wolf who had called his brother a whore. Without hesitation, he leapt, his powerful body colliding with the larger wolf, sending him crashing to the ground. Oath wasted no time, teeth bared as he sank them deep into the wolf’s shoulder, his growl low and lethal.

The transporter howled in pain, trying to wrench himself free, but Oath only tightened his grip. “You think you can break him?” Oath snarled, his voice filled with venom. He shoved the wolf away, watching him scramble in the sand before turning to the other.

That one hesitated, eyes wide in fear. Oath took a step forward, his crimson eyes glowing with deadly intent. “You’ll regret ever touching him.”

The wolf backed away, unsure whether to fight or flee, but before he could decide, Oath lunged again, tackling him to the ground. This time, his strike was swift - one sharp bite to the neck, and the transporter lay still, his breath stolen away by the darkness.

Breathing hard, Oath rose to his paws and turned to Abaddon, chest heaving. Oath rushed to his side, tearing the ropes from his muzzle with his teeth, his heart aching at the sight of Abaddon’s frail body.

“Abaddon,” Oath whispered, his voice softer now, “I’m here. You’re safe.”
