Sarak

He?d settled Sarka in a den of her own; a place she could run to and have time alone when she needed it. He hadn?t needed her to speak to know she wasn?t comfortable being with the main group. She wasn?t even comfortable around him. So after he?d settled her, he?d had a word with Erani and Surreal to let them know Sarkas presence, and to let them know she was nervous around the larger groups. Now he had forged south into the Valley. It was deserted, Olympus having been challenged for and taken by another who had moved it. With winter rolling in, he was glad for it. This was an easy distance to go for food, and would mean less strain on the Willows prey populace.

He slowed, standing in the cover of the pines that stood sentinel all around the edges of the bowl. The grass was browned by the season, but prey still grazed here. Elk, deer, and a few bison. His mossy greens scanned the herds, seeking out a weakness; searching for a limp, or an animal that wasn?t faring as well as the others. That had been Eranis rule since the beginning of her reign. Hunt only the weak stock, leave the healthy ones to reproduce. Even though she wasn?t queen anymore, he still followed the concept. It was a part of nature. Wolves hunted the ill animals that might wipe out a herd if they weren?t removed.

Ah. There was a possible target. Even from here, the calf seemed to struggle, often standing listless while others of its generation romped and flaunted and practiced the natural evasive maneuvers that might keep them alive under the attack of a predator. The calfs movements were mechanical, and he stood huddled, ears drooped. The elk cow stood close, as though she knew her baby wasn?t going to live through the season, but was unwilling to part company until all hope was lost. That mother would be a tricky obstacle.

Sarak paced along the treeline, surveying for other targets in the herds. An old bull of a bison, his humped body and shaggy hide hanging on a thin frame. He could be a target, but if Sarak was hunting alone, and he was as of the moment, he would prefer to bring down a smaller target; the calf for instance. The bull, he decided, would be left for a later hunt, when he?d have Alsander and possibly Surreal along to help with the take-down.
