She didn't rebuff his advances and while it appeared that her proclamation was shaky at best, she didn't back down or even shy away as he approached. The woman was hesitant, he was aware of that, and had she expressed her nervousness in any way it was possible that he would have respected her wishes and eased off, but that's not what she was doing.
