Their first steps were shaky, but at least they were making progress. They left the water and padded across the sand. Arian sometimes had to lean heavily against him, but he didn't mind. "My family raised me to speak Welsh," Hiraeth said, slipping into his accent. "Of course, it became necessary to learn English as I traveled to new lands. Still, I think Welsh is a more beautiful language. What other languages do you speak, milady?" he asked.
They managed to make it several yards away from the water when Hiraeth stopped to give the woman a short break. She mentioned a husband and he gave a soft smile. "Well, then I suppose we should see to it that you return home safely. As for me, I'll need to keep moving, but thank you for offering your hospitality to me." It would have been nice to settle somewhere even temporarily, but he wanted to explore. If he stayed still too long his grief might catch up with him and swallow him whole. "Besides, I don't need any payment for helping you. I'm doing it because it's the right thing to do." Nothing more, nothing less. |
