Anthem of the Lonely

Gently Olafur grasp Ashelia's leg in his hands. He examined it carefully, palpating around the break in an effort to get a sense of what needed to be done. With practiced ease his hands moved quickly down her leg before settling on her toes. There they settled for a long moment as he tried to gauge the warmth in them. There was a fair amount of swelling in the limb already and the toes were chilled, but not terribly so. "Are all monkeys as cute as Olafur?" His gaze immediately left the foot and he spluttered indignantly. Cute? He didn't want to be cute! That same word was used to describe bunnies. The indignity! His gaze returned to the foot and then went back to Ashe's gaze before the macaque harrumphed and glossed over the question by asking one of his own. A professional question. "Can you feel your toes?" The limb was definitely broken. He'd have to have Odysseus help him splint it. Olafur's gaze followed Ashelia's as she glanced back at her tail. As he'd suspected. The idea of tending to that kind of damage made him mildly uncomfortable, but he knew that if he showed that discomfort the woman would be made all the more embarrassed by it. It was not her fault that she was injured there and he was determined to treat her with the dignity she deserved. He would have to do something about that anxiety, though. Without a word he turned from her to rummage through his belongings. When he found the plants he was looking for he turned back and set them down in front of her. "Here," he said. "Chew these up and swallow them. They'll help with the pain." They would also ease her anxiety and calm her. The leaves had mild sedative properties. Having met with failure Odysseus returned. His gravelly voice preceded him. "How goes it?" Without turning Olafur responded, "We're going to need to make a splint." With a nod to himself Odysseus disappeared once again while Olafur prepared an antiseptic to clean Ashelia's wounds. Taking care of them would give the sedative time to kick in, something they'd need if they were going to take care of her leg properly. |
