It was such a looooooooong time (like ten whole minutes!) of nothing happening that Chaos quickly grew bored with his plan. And despite being covered in cold mud he was warm enough beneath his fluffy coat, so as he'd stretched out there waiting... he'd begun to nod off.
Just a little at first, then he'd jerk back awake and glare out at the path for a while again, but finally he couldn't fight the pull any longer and he dipped further and further forward, eyes sliding closed and sinking under the mud until only his leathery nose remained above the mud. A quiet, snorting snore began to issue forth from that nose as the young wolf snoozed. As his sister began to approach the mud puddle the unaware Chaos inhabited, he accidentally nodded forward in his sleep, dipping his nose under the muddy water. His next breath brought mud water shooting up his nose, and Chaos, still half asleep, leaped to his feet with a confused and loud yowl of discomfort, flinging mud every which-way.

Unless otherwise mentioned as absent, assume that both Great Horned owl companions are nearby
Chaos speaks in a strong lisp, which I am usually too lazy to write
