He pressed his muzzle to the top of her skull, then pulled away as she stepped back. It was clear she needed a moment to collect herself and he simply looked at her sadly as the thanks fell from her lips. The Alpha did not believe he deserved any such words, but to hear them from the young wolf, and to know she wasn't bitter at the world, helped a little with the pain in his heart.
When she spoke next, his eyes didn't lessen their hurt, but his smile looked a little more real. “It was your father that ensured we met. I suppose in his own way he's still looking after you, even now” he told her gently, before nodding his head towards his borders. “We have a long day ahead of us, should we get started?” he said softly, through he didn't yet move – he would not rush her, but let her take whatever pace she needed.
