Sardines on Toast

There was something weird smelling... somewhere in front of her. What it was, she couldn't say, but it was definitely odd. She creeped out of her father's den quietly, now knowing the layout perfectly. She knew where most everything was now, through much bumping around - Of course, it helped that the girl could now 'see' shapes, and some colors. Blurry, of course, but less darkness and more... brightness. It was incredibly weird for her, but her father reassured her it was okay. It was only in her right eye that the darkness was turning bright - now that she could actually label these things as light and dark.
She padded quietly towards the smell, and it got stronger... and stronger... and stronger, until her nose bumped something wet and cold. Squealing, she fell back on her haunches, rubbing at her nose and shaking her head back and forth, with her left ear flopping around. What was that?
