Taking Off

Crimson stained sunlight spilled over the snow as dawn rose on yet another winter’s morn.  Birna flexed her legs lightly, her breath coming in slow steady breaths.  She lived here.  She had no plans, no future and more doubts than she knew what to do with.  Would her brother be proud of her or would he laugh?  How many clans had she served?  How many had she seen wither?    What was a knight with no kingdom to serve?  But spirits she was fucking tired…  she was going to go solo for now.  She was going to test and push herself until she was certain she could face her brother proudly… assuming he was even still alive.

Ankle-deep snow clung to her coat as she strode into a snow-blown plain.  Birna howled for a challenger.  Time was wasting and when the crimson light faded as the sun rose higher she sought to stain it with something that would linger into spring.
