Grasping straws

There was so much to think about, and already there was alot on her plate. Nobody had arrived when Vereux called, but she didn't think that enough time had been given for someone to appear. Katja could have been ill for all they knew, and whether or not the Viking woman had heard it would be determined. Surely someone did, and no doubt the alphess would send someone to investigate, or maybe even she herself would come to lay claim to what had belonged to her. These were only a fraction of the thoughts that ran through her head, because she didn't know what she would do when or if the time came. Vereux was her mate, yes. And she would protect him when she could, but she wasn't going to put the whole pack at risk for one life.
Sighing, the woman made her way to the mines where Vereux seemed to frequent. The scent of Vereux mingled with herbs wafted out of the caves, her steps light and her expression neutral to hide the turmoil that raged on in her mind. Her mate made her happy, yes. But damn all the trouble that came with trying to be happy. Her parents made it look so easy...so why was it so hard for her? "Vereux?" She wasn't exactly sure which cave he might be in thanks to the strong smell of herbs around her.
