When life comes by

Xephyris perked to the sound of Limno's call, a strangely excited but nervous flutter in his stomach. He knew why she was calling, which meant it was time. He'd hardly had time to think about what was to come, to think about the fact that he was going to be a father. He didn't know what to expect, or what he would feel when he saw them. As he charged along the beach toward the place where Limno had dug out her birthing den, his head lifted to call out to Armai. He hoped that the small woman was around, and that she would be able to come during this time. He didn't have any experience with this sort of thing, and he would feel absolutely helpless. Even if things went perfectly well, he wouldn't know the difference. And if it went wrong... well, he'd be more of a burden than a help. After his voice had carried off across the beach, he found the entrance to the den and stood outside, poking his head in, not wanting to disturb Limno too much by just shoving his way in. "Limno, are you okay?" he asked, panting from the sprint he'd made to get here, "I've called for the healer. Everything should be fine, right?" Suddenly he felt a surge of panic. What if things went wrong? What if she lost the pups, or they weren't born healthy? What would happen if she was injured, or died giving birth?
