He always thought that the depression Surreal had found him in years ago would be his lowest point. Oh how wrong he was. He was a broken, shattered, shell of a man. He barely noticed the steps he was taking any more. He just followed the sound and scent of his son and Kavdaya, his head hanging toward the ground as he dragged along behind him. This was the only moment since he lost his sight that he was actually glad to be blind. At least now he didn't have to see Regulus dragging Surreal's body back home. He kept asking himself over and over why it wasn't him on that deer hide. Why couldn't he have been the one with cancer. Why couldn't he have just passed with her. He wanted to. He wished he would have had the balls to just ask one of the healers there to give him something that would kill him off as well. He knew they had to have something there that would do it. But he didn't. He just laid there with her till she passed and only stopped sobbing when Regulus made him leave.

Falk stopped when he noticed that the dragging sound and the sound of paw steps stopped ahead of him. It wasn't till then that all the exhaustion in his muscles settled in and his hind legs collapsed under him, sitting him down on his haunches hard. "Why her? I was the useless one, the blind one. The children depended on her so much more than they ever did me. I'm just a burden to them. Why couldn't you have taken me?" he silently asked the heavens, feeling a mix of numbness and searing pain as he sat there and listened to Regulus' howl. They were home, for better or worse.
