. . .

Champion was supposed to be walking, but her nervousness had her practically skipping through the snow. Nervousness? Was she nervous? What fun! That was new!

In all seriousness though, she had been putting this off. She'd made an attempt to talk to Newt about it, but her friend was busy with her Queenly duties. Champ understood. In the end, the only one she'd told was Vio, and all she'd said was: "I recently learned... I might have some sort of connected... to the Glaciems... I just wanna scope out the place, get a feel for it. I don't know if we'll actually talk to anyone."

And thinking of the male, Champion turned her head to look over her shoulder. "Thanks for coming along Vio," she said, turning the male beside her. She knew he didn't have to do any of this - the following her around in Amenti, much less coming along to Glaciem. He wasn't her rescued slave anymore. He was a full member of the pack. He had his freedom. But she'd gotten used to the guy tagging along - always making everything a game. She was glad that he hadn't cut and run as soon as his time was served.

Besides, she hadn't been such a bad person to be a servant to right? What other master played games of tag?

"It means alot," she added. She didn't like thinking that she could be scared of anything. Fear had never been a part of her. It just wasn't in her code. She stood up to serial killers, a zombie wolf in the swamps, crazy loners, rushing rivers - it was all a game! But this... this was a part of her past, and possibly... a part of her future? Oh she didn't know! It was too complicated.

She'd never thought she'd find her mother. It had been a dream of her's as a pup, when she'd grown up on stories of how the mysterious southern queen "Sadie" and, the pack giant "Mouse" had found in the great wars against the empire of white wolves and helped win back the North. But Mouse had died in the war and Sadie, after having his pup, was tricked by a midwife into believing that that pup was dead. Sadie had left, absolutely heartbroken. But Champion was that pup. Long after the wolf who called herself 'Sadie' had left, the truth was found out by her comrades. But Champion had never thought...

Not until she'd met that chatty cathy Maka in Dreamer's Col. Who's spoken about the Glaciem wolf 'Crusade' and her adventures in the Far North. And how she'd fallen in love with a giant male named Mouse...

Champion shook her head. She didn't need anything like that, really! She'd found a home for herself. She had a pack! She was a Beta! She had an Alphess for a best friend.

And yet she was curious. She wanted to know more.

Champion trotted up to scent markers that showed where the border was. There were faint depression in the snow - where trailed had been made by patroling wolves. Seemed they ran a tight ship. What was the name of their Alpha again? Chief? No, no, that was what they called the rank. Gargoyle! That was it. Rumor was that he had no tail because, years ago, starving out in the wilds, he ate it to survive.

Sounded like Champ's kind of man..... Except that if this whole Crusade thing was true..... ick! that made him her uncle.

Again - too much to think about.

It seemed that they weren't alone on the borders today. Champion, wondering if she ought not to be seen, hesitated. But too late. There was no cover around here. They'd probably already been seen. So, throwing caution to the wind, the mammoth pushed into a snow-plowing lope and made her way over. "Good day, stranger! Are you one of the Glaciems?"
