Pack Rules, Culture, & History

What the Crew will expect from you:

1. Don’t be a dick. Treat packmates the way you want to be treated. If you have beef, you need to take care of it instead of bitching at each other and disrupting solidarity. If you need to fight it out, fight it out and be done with it. Long term grudges against packmates won’t be tolerated.

2. The Crew comes first. If you’re going to be in the Crew, you had better put the Crew and your fellow members before anyone or anything outside of the Crew. If you take a mate outside of the Crew, you had better be prepared to bring them into the Crew if things get serious. You aren’t expected to cut all outside ties or anything, but the Crew has to be your first priority.

3. All your pups belong in the Crew. You don’t need to ask permission to have pups. The Boss doesn’t need nor does he want to hear about your sex life. However, if you have pups born to a female outside the pack, they absolutely must be brought into the Crew, or you must completely renounce your parental rights and any involvement with the pups. Regardless of which parent is the outsider, if the pups are brought into the pack they must join the Crew or renounce their parental rights over the pups. There can be no major outside liabilities or distractions that might take away from rule #2. This will be strictly enforced.

4. Rape and underage sex are not ok. There are a couple exceptions to the “doesn’t need nor does he want to hear about your sex life” bit. They go hand in hand with the first rule but in this case they apply to outside wolves too. Rape is never ok, and neither is condoning rape through choosing not to report a rapist. Similarly, sex or any form of sexual contact with an underage wolf is absolutely not ok. That means any wolf under the age of two, even if the underage wolf is a willing participant. This rule is very strictly enforced.

5. Child abuse is not ok either. Anyone caught abusing a pup (that’s any wolf under a year) whether they’re in the pack or not will be punished. Any bully who’d use their greater age and size to smack around an innocent kid aren’t welcome in the Crew. It’s one thing to teach a kid to fight or to discipline bad behavior and another thing entirely to abuse or maim a kid. Trash behavior like that won’t be tolerated.

6. The Crew is not a charity. If you have nothing or are not willing to contribute to the wellbeing of your brothers and sisters in the pack, find someplace else to lay your head. Even if all you bring to the table is loyalty and a willingness to lend a paw however you are able, that’s still something. If you join and then refuse to do anything, expect to be bonded until you’ve worked off your debt before being kicked out of the pack.

7. Loyalty is a thing. If you’re planning on just passing through, the Crew isn’t the pack you’re looking for. It isn’t cool to expect a pack to take you in and share their food, shelter, and secrets with you only for you to turn around and walk out on them. It’s understood that if, in the future, you need to move on no one’s going to force you to stick around, but don’t expect the Boss to be happy about it. And keep in mind, it’s not a revolving door. Once you’re out, you won’t be welcomed back.

Depending on the severity of the crime, any wolf caught breaking these rules can expect to be demoted, bonded, or kicked from the pack and/or maimed.

What can you expect from the Crew:

1. The pack lands are always a safe haven. As casual as the Crew is about their own members’ chaotic behavior concerning other packs, they will defend their own pack lands and resources with a possessive ferocity, so you never have to worry about feeling secure in your own home.

2. The Crew will protect its own. You and your family will always be protected in the pack. Anyone who tries to hurt one of the Crew will find themselves facing the fangs and wrath of all of them. And what can’t be prevented, will be avenged.

3. You will be cared for. In your times of greatest need, whether through injury or sickness or age, the Crew will be there to take care of you and provide for you. If there is a shortage due to natural disaster, the Crew will find a way anyway.

4. Respect given is respect earned. Every ounce of respect and loyalty you pour into the pack will be returned from every member, from the Boss to the kids.

5. The Crew has your back. Assuming you don’t do something really shitty like rape or cannibalism or killing kids, you can always know the Crew is going to be there to pull your bacon from the fire if you screw up.

6. Pride. The Crew will take pride in you and in your actions, and in return you can be proud of your brothers and sisters in the Crew. You will be lifted up and exalted for who you are and what you do.

7. You can realize your potential. Whatever it is you want to do, wherever it is your skillsets lie, whatever your interests, the Crew will find a way to help you realize your full potential in it. Even if they have to look outside the pack for help, the Crew will provide you with the training and resources you need to be the very best you can be.

Customs:

The Gauntlet is a way for wolves to prove themselves as warriors, either to move from runt or pikey to War Boy in a spectacular prestige-building manner, or to prove themselves worthy of being War Lord. It consists of fighting every single one of the pack's adult warriors one after the other without giving up, or every adult member who wishes to participate in the case of there not being many warriors. This will by necessity be more grueling for a would-be War Lord than for a runt seeking to be a War Boy, so they will be held to a higher standard and be expected to acquit themselves well in each fight in addition to their refusal to give up. Though permanent maims are strongly frowned on, there's no specific rule against it either so this can be a dangerous experience if your pack members hold a grudge against you.

The Race is a way for wolves to prove themselves as scouts, either to move from runt or pikey to Lookout in a spectacular prestige-building manner, or to prove themselves worthy of being Watcher. The Race requires them to take a route that leads them through the whole northern continent, proving themselves capable of moving through a large variety of biomes and terrains despite whatever dangers those lands throw at them, placing their pawmark in paint on a specific stone placed in each land they pass through to prove their route. This proves their endurance and wide knowledge of lands, ability to navigate, and ability to deal with potentially dangerous or inconvenient weather patterns. This is by necessity more grueling for a would-be Watcher than for someone wishing to become a Lookout, so they will be held to a higher standard and be expected to make their way through pack lands (gathering some recognizable item from that pack's land) on their route to prove their ability to travel unnoticed - and their ability to escape if they are!

Counting Coup refers to winning prestige against anyone not of the Crew. It consists of gaining prestige through acts of bravery with a risk of injury or death. Any blow against an enemy is counted, but more prestige is gained by acts such as touching an enemy with a paw without being harmed, raiding, or trespassing on another pack's territory. It is worth more prestige to escape unharmed rather than to be wounded during the attempt. After a battle or major exploit the Crew will gather and share stories about their acts of bravery and 'count coup'. Some wolves will choose to display their prestige in various ways from eagle feathers to painted bars.

Crowing most often takes place after a successful pack hunt when the pack is able to feast and enjoy themselves, or after a raid. It consists of rounds of toasts with alcohol interspersed with rounds of bragging. This might be a time of counting coup, or bragging of past accomplishments, or it might be bragging about what accomplishments one intends to pursue. It is expected that other members of the Crew will challenge these brags to keep any bad luck gained by possible dishonesty from the rest of the pack. It often continues until they've managed to drink each other under the metaphorical table.

Carnival is the spring festival that invites all other wolves to join the Crew in a wild, crazy month of games, drinking, music, carousing, and other such things. There will often be a night or several of crowing that might break up as the wolves pair off for more... private games. It is a celebration of youth, fertility, life, and freedom.

Harvest Fair is the month-long open festival taking place in the autumn. It is a time for trading with anyone who has goods or services to trade and stock up on whatever they lack for the winter. It is also a time for celebration, feasting, and remembering your ancestors and all those who have died, particularly those who died that year. There are often several nights of crowing dedicated to the dead.
