Step by step, he brought himself further into the water. First he felt the water creeping up his legs, and he kept walking until it had nearly covered his back. At this point he was able to lift his paws up from the sand below, kicking lightly to keep himself afloat. He thought he'd gone out pretty far, but when he looked up he saw that Faine was still a few yards ahead of him. She said that he didn't have to come over there if he didn't want to, but of course now it felt like a challenge. And Alarik wasn't the type to back down from a challenge, so he reached down to the sandy ocean floor and pushed himself forward, paddling his way over to Faine.

"Hey," he said with a chuckle. He couldn't deny that it took some effort; swimming didn't come as naturally to him as it did to her. But he was getting the hang of it. And staying afloat actually seemed a bit easier in the salty water. Now if only the waves would stop making him bob up and down...
