Cross meandered along in the wake of his mother. The same day that Uncle Gargie had had to leave to fight for his throne, one of the rogue pyschos had gotten past the borders, and Cross had ended up fighting for his life. Well now, it couldn't really be called fighting. He'd been weak. He'd been helpless.

But he refused to be next time.

Since then, he hadn't spoken a word, but, if anything, he'd seen more. His pupish naivete was beginning to fade. He actually listened to the adults and made sense of their words. Which meant that when he learned of the challenge and that his Uncle had lost - he knew full well that their world was about to change. But he also knew now that wolves could die. Quickly. Painfully. And that Glaciem wolves, like Awaken who'd come to his rescue, could slaughter without a moment's hesitation. It was a terrible revelation for one so young. But the fact was, it didn't frighten him.

...perhaps that was what made it so terrible.

"Now, you stay back a bit, pups." he heard his mother say as they came within sight of the wolf that could only be the challenger. Cross plucked his haunches down without a word. His cold emerald eyes were fixed ahead, watching the stranger and listening to his mother.
