Pouncing Piping Plovers

The little bird was rattling around in her mouth in search of a way out and Kanja, smug over her victory, decided to play with it by pushing it around with her tongue. Her jaws were parted just enough for the bird to see freedom, but not quite far enough for it to stick more than its beak out. Its frightened peeps were music to her ears. It was a little victory, but she was pleased. Add that to her list of attributes. Smarter and faster than a beach bird. Huzzah.
With the sound of the waves at her back Kanja didn't hear the stranger approach. She did, however, see her coming out of the corner of her eye. It was the brilliant, unnatural color of her coat that drew Kanja's attention away from her prize. She did a double take before turning to face the woman.
"Hey, nice catch!" With her mouth full it would be difficult to respond, so instead Kanja gave a satirical bow before shooting the woman a playful wink. She grinned around the bird and then opened her mouth wide. For a moment the confused plover lay still and then it seemed to realize its prison had been opened. The little bird was off like a shot, leaving sand and feathers in its wake. For a moment Kanja watched it fly off before turning her attention back to the stranger. She shrugged before offering an explanation. "I just wanted to see if I could catch one. They're a little scrawny to be eating; it'd take a whole flock to make a meal."
