You Want To See How Deep The Bullet Lies

His white tipped ear flicked in her direction as she spoke, his body curled like a crescent moon on the cool floor, practically invisible on the dark stone of his den. The newly dubbed Sergeant Major had made his den in one of the smaller caverns running alongside the river flowing through the mountain. It was bigger than the den he had made for himself in Abaven; with a high ceiling and a mouth that was guarded by stalagmites.

Without a word he rose, stretching his spine by keeping his hips on the floor and raising his shoulders until they cracked. In truth he hadn’t slept since raising his pack-his dream made real- and had hardly eaten, since he and the rest of Dauntless followed him to the cascading waterfall in the frozen north. He had meant to talk to Aranea sooner, tell her every emotion that filled his heart, but when she entered the newly claimed land, stinking of another male, his heart had sunk and he had turned away from her coldly.

He stepped between the glittering pillars in the mouth of his den and walked past her before stopping and without turning uttered a single word; “Come.” And with that he resumed walking, deeper and deeper into the cave.
