Soldiering On

He arrived early as usual; the first member of the pack outside the leading family to answer the call. He stepped toward the pair and their remaining child and laid on the ground before them. “My Lord, My Lady.” He greeted his voice as gruff as ever. Yale had yet to forgive himself for his failure in finding the missing child and returning her to her home but had at least made an effort to appear less melancholy. He wondered if the girl he had encountered on that early autumn morning would appear, or if she would instead be too distracted playing to attend. He would at least meet the child’s mother he supposed and that would at the very least be something interesting.
