On My Last Leg
She was hungry. Starving even. She hadn't eaten a good, filling meal in a while. She couldn't catch much on her own, so the woman had been surviving off of small fish she managed to catch in shallow pools or bird eggs. Chasing down larger prey was out of the question, she didn't have the stamina for that...she had been searching for Nyko for so long, and she had lost hope that she'd ever find him. No trace. No scent. Not even a whisper of his name. It was like he simply fell off the face of the earth. To top it all off, a blizzard had started up and she was right in the middle of it. The wind howled around her, toppling her over now and again, often tossing her to the ground. Her lack of limb and lack of strength made her feel like nothing more than a leaf in the wind, and she knew she needed to find shelter or she might not survive the night.
While the wind whipped around her, she struggled to move forward. It was hard for her to see, and she made herself glow in the hopes that some how...he'd find her. But what were the chances that Nyko would step out of the blizzard and sweep her up, anyway? No. She was hoping too much. Shivering, she pressed on in the snow, ears pressed back as she moved painstakingly slow across the range.
She felt like she was walking forever when out of nowhere a huge barn loomed over her. Squinting through the wind whipped snow, she tried to move as fast as she possibly could towards the shelter. Once inside, she went to the furthest corner she could, feebly shaking off the snow that had crusted on her pelt but her ears, whiskers, tail, and parts of her fur were still iced. Hungry and exhausted and freezing, she carefully settled herself in a corner, her tail curled over her nose and she lied there, body violently shivering. Sniffling, she wasn't sure what to do now. She could hope that the blizzard would die tonight, and she could hope that she could wait it out long enough...but after that, what? She didn't know what was around that she could hunt, but even then she was too weak to even chase anything down. She felt...lost. Without Nyko, without someone to help her...she was useless. Closing her eyes at that thought, she shifted into a tighter ball, her markings giving off a soft but weak glow...the girl would drift into uneasy slumber. |
