He was further from Ruina than he had ever gone since joining. He had left the island with the intent of finding the mysterious male he had played with in the mangroves, but had lost the scent when he reached the delta. Either unwilling to give up his search or too restless to return home the lightning king had continued to wander.

By the time he landed on the island his dissatisfaction had grown to discontent and even the beautiful sights of the birds and the shimmering sea had seemed dull to him. The male bounded onto a flat outcropping of rock on the beach and laid down, crossing his paws at his wrists before settling his head on top of them. He knew he couldn’t justify the heartbreak he felt; he had only met Kai once and all the boy had done was complement him on the half truths he had said to impress the red marked male. He sighed deeply and closed his eyes, in truth praise was something he craved desperately. In his heart of hearts his failures outweighed his accomplishments and haunted him, he recalled Vali telling him he would never lead Abaven, and Sparrow in her infinite incompetence taking the helm instead. The fact that he was beneath her in particular nettled him, and he found himself clenching his teeth just at the thought.

The sudden sound of paws dunking into water pulled him from his thoughts, his heart fluttering momentarily as he raised his head, expecting to see Kai. Instead it was a girl; a bicolored mix of black and white that he found strangely appealing. It might not have been the maverick he had hoped for, but the chance to meet anyone was a welcome distraction from his own turmoiled thoughts. He gave a soft bark in greeting, his tail tapping pleasantly against the boulder in a welcoming gesture.
