More and more Rain left Ruina’s borders, and more and more he stayed out longer. Not that it mattered, not that anyone cared, his father spent nearly all his time hunting for his new son. Astraios. “Ass-traios is more like it.” He thought contemptuously. He huffed, that wasn’t right, the boy had done nothing to him, and truth be told he was no longer sure he wanted his father’s attention anymore.

He turned his head toward the sky to watch the glittering stars, his heart aching painfully. Ruina had changed his father; in his childhood his father had been caring, and taught him as much as he could about the world, even when their search for the mysterious vanished leader consumed him he still made time to speak to his son, and tell him stories from his childhood. Stories about his grandmother and his uncle, how they were willing to turn their backs on Abaven for him… and how much it hurt him that he had failed them.

He moved closer to the lake, his head nearly touching the ground and his ears flat. Now his father looked at him with disappointment, when he voiced his disinterest in the pack and becoming a zepar his father had met him with outrage and nearly chased him out of their den. It wasn’t long after that his father had found a new cave to sleep in closer to the mountain’s peak, leaving Rain alone. They rarely saw each other now, and hadn’t spoken to each other for what felt like weeks. The rejection hurt him deeply, but he didn’t know what to do.

He had just gotten to the water’s edge when the sound of someone approaching caught his attention. Slowly he looked up from the black waters and to his amazement, saw a familiar face approach him. “Grandmother?” he called softly, almost disbelieving that in his time of need and so desperate for familial love the only sane member of his family he had ever known had appeared.
