There was no more need for words. Xephyris lowered his center of gravity by bending his knees and elbows, rolling his shoulders forward to protect his neck. He tipped his chin downward to keep his throat covered. The hackles along his neck and back rose defensively, while his ears flattened to keep them out of reach. His tail lifted and straightened out behind him, aligned with his spine to aid with his balance. He eyed his opponent for a moment, noticing how the male's gaze seemed to drift off-center, and he didn't seem to be looking anywhere in particular. It was peculiar, but not knowing of the brute's condition, Xephyris didn't quite know what to make of it. When the larger, younger male lowered his head, Xephyris didn't expect him to lunge, and was taken off guard. Normally he could watch his opponent's gaze to see where they intended to go, but this was different. What was going on?

He didn't have much time to react as the larger wolf closed the distance between them, and he knew an attempt to dodge would just be too slow. He still had his reflexes, but his body couldn't quite keep up. So instead of trying to get out of the way, Xephyris lowered his head so that Dragon's chest slam struck the back of Xeph's shoulders. It would leave a mild bruise, and Xephyris felt his hind legs give out a bit from the force, falling back onto his left hip. He found his head and neck underneath the front of Dragon's chest - this caused his opponent's bite to miss his ear, though his left foreleg was able to reach over Xeph's back, just over the back of his shoulders.

The claws of his forepaws dug into the ground as he made an effort to retaliate. His head twisted sharply up and to the right, parted jaws seeking the skin of Dragon's right armpit. He would try to find a grip there, hoping to inflict moderate punctures and keep a hold. In his position, it was about all he could do until he was able to get to his paws again, a difficult task with such a large male standing over him.
