He had not seen her since the fall of Ruina. He had not seen her as he followed quietly after Ty, watching the man form a new pack, he hadn't seen her as he taught himself to hunt, or watched the world quietly from the background. He had not spoken to anyone but Ty for months now, and wondered if he was losing who he was. No, that was the wrong question. He wondered if he had ever had any originality to lose. He didn't know who he was, and barely ever had. But whatever he was, he was losing the last bits of him that remained.

He had though she had led him to Ty, and then abandoned him. So why was she here now? He almost turned his head when he saw the flicker of light in his peripheral vision, but caught himself just in time. His body gave a little shake, a jolt going through him as adrenaline touched his system. He felt awake again, at long last, for the first time in a very long time.

Why here and now? He knew the rules. He asked no questions. He simply moved, rising from where he lay as fell silently to his feet, head bowed so he would not accidently glance up at her and scare away this shadow of who she had once been. He swallowed, wishing desperately to ask the questions in his heart. Why did you leave me? Where did you go? When can I join you?
Saying nothing, the yearling trailed slowly after her, using the shadows of her paws as his guide, caring not where she led him, only that she was here.

They left the pack lands together, in the encroaching dark of evening. She was easy to see, her light tones had a luminescent shine to them, one he could follow even without looking directly at her.

He almost didn’t realise when she came to a stop, and saw something else from the other corner of his eyes. He raised his head in that direction, and almost let out a gasp. He stifled it with great effort, and lowered his head again immediately.
Impossible.
It was another wolf, but one with soft wings that trailed from his back. Was this a friend of his mother's? He had never before considered she might have any, and was glad that she did. After another moment's reflection, he realised this wolf was more corporeal then his mother, and the thought made him angry. Hot tears burned in the eyes of his lowered head, through he did not shed them, and did not make a sound.
How dare this stranger be more real to him then his own mother.
