Pain – its just a trick of the mind. Sometimes you can channel it, some times you can own it, sometimes you can use it. A stimulant to keep you sharp. The pain Ra felt now was different. Sickening, fearful, dangerous. Something begging him to shut his eyes and rest. Just for a moment. And if he did that – the shadow of death. Its claws would be into him deeper than the wounds Nephthys had caused him. He could not let his body fall into that gentle sleep of Elyssium. But the pain. His snapped bone hurt like nothing he had experienced before. Pain that he could not shut out. Like something shouting in his head. Like nothing else could happen while this pain existed. Most times he felt like he was in control. Now this pain was chasing him out of his own body. And yet that was not the worst of it. Face down in the dust. And listening to the words of defeat. The sound of his own devils teeth spawn telling him he was finished. Nephthys words were sharper than any dagger. He feared to lift his head from the dirt as he knew the sight of her victorious would be too painful to bear. He was in no position to argue. His fur now matted with congealing blood from his neck. Leg shattered and broken. It would be enough of a battle just to stand, dignity could be too much to stand. And there was Amunet too. He had not cared for her feelings so many times. But this defeat at the hands of a woman who Amunet had defeated – it meant Amunet no longer cared. To be treated as, as … nothing by her hurt as well. He raised himself up on his front legs, and instantly slumped forward, his shattered bone was useless. He took one step forward, limping on. No choice but to submit. But maybe he could have a last word. I salute you Pharaoh. King lead your people now. And lead them well. Pharaohs fall as well you know. Deserts are full of ancient statues to forgotten kings. I submit to you my spawn. But now I must leave. Ra stumbled and tripped, shuffling away from this bloody place. He would return. Not tomorrow. Not next week. But he would return.
