Cool for the Summer
The weather this summer was strange, but then again it was her first real summer. She couldn't quite remember the summer she was born in, but she doubted it was raining as much then as it was now. When she first left pack lands, the sky was grey, and it had been the last couple of days, but she didn't take into account that it would actually rain today. When the first drops had started to fall, she was too far from the pack to make it back without getting caught in the storm, so she decided to try and find shelter nearby. The small yearling bounded across the forming mud, trying to find a safe place where she could wait out the storm when a crack of lightning lit up the sky. Eyes went wide and her ears pressed firmly to her head in fear. She had never seen lightning before, and didn't realize how loud the thunder could be. It left her shaking, heart racing as she tried to hurry.
Narrowing her eyes against the now driving rain and wind, she felt like she was about to get blown right off her feet! Another flash of lightning and roar of thunder sent her running then. She could hardly see as she streaked across the ground. Unfortunately, she didn't see the ground was open ahead of her. Suddenly her feet fell from the earth, and she rolled down a hill for what felt like a terrifyingly long time before she rolled several yards into the mud below. The air was knocked out of her for several long moments before she struggled to pick herself up. Shaking her head to try and clear the dizziness, she felt tears prickle at her eyes before she started to cry. She was cold, bruised, and caked in mud from head to toe. Luckily, nothing had been broken as far as she could tell, and when she looked around another flash of lightning revealed an opening in the side of the gorge she had fallen into.
Wasting no more time, she headed towards the opening to take shelter. It was cold and damp in the small cave, but it was better than being stuck in the driving wind and rain. Huddling in a ball against the cold stone floor, she watched the rain fall heavily outside. She wanted to go home already, but she wasn't keen on going back out there. Not until the rain stopped and it was safe to make the trip back.
