Eris Pyre

Twilight was her least favorite time of day. At least at night she knew what she was up against, but the frail rays of sun in the evening played tricks on her worsening vision. Shapes lurched and shifted as she trod along, following a familiar scent. She knew his scent as well as she knew her own - it was musky and thick, reminding her of days long gone. They were practically littermates. Eris had depended on him! And yet he had left, just like her mother. The female was quietly furious, but true to her Ademre training, her face was neutral. Her eyes betrayed nothing, as always, staring vacantly ahead. There was nothing to make sense of any more. Everything was shapes and colors. It was more important to pick out the smells and sounds.

There! Eris paused and lifted her tail, lowering her nose to the ground. She stepped forward carefully, placing each paw thoughtfully as she scented the grass. Lament was beneath the sweet, sickly smell of rotting fruit. Tor, why did he cross this wretched field? The scent of fruit was so heavy she could almost hear it. The crossing of her senses was becoming more common as the world she could see around her narrowed - smells were loud and there were noises she could taste. She caught the barest whiff of him, musky beneath the fermenting sugars, and took off at a sprint. The last of the dying light guided her without incident through the trees. As it began to fade to darkness and she lost all hope of sight, Lament's scent grew stronger.

She crashed through the undergrowth, her tail flagging high. His scent was all she could smell, he had to be close! The sun dipped beneath the horizon and Eris' world snapped out of existence. But he was so near... she didn't slow, careening onward at a clip. She threw her muzzle to the sky and howled joyously. It was totally uncharacteristic of their training, but she couldn't resist. It had been so long, and she had been so lonely.

With a graceless thud, Eris tripped over a rogue pile of apples. The spoiled fruit covered her fur, adding to the twigs, leaves, and dirt that had already braided themselves into the longer hair at her neck, shoulders, and back. Eris, breathing hard, rolled to her paws and braced herself. She took a moment to reorient herself. After shaking out her fur, the smell of apples subsided - and suddenly, she knew exactly where she was. Despite the obstacles she had faced, she'd made it. The small, leggy female didn't need her eyes to know Lament was in the same clearing - she could smell it, taste it, feel it in her bones. She rushed him. Eris pressed her head deep into his shoulder, running her skull continuously underneath his chin. "Lament, I missed you! Lament, I was lost without you... I followed your scent for so long... Lament Lament Lament... We can seek our fortune together! I do not take up much space..." Mostly, she repeated his name over and over.
