I gave up hoping some miracle would set me free

Kaveh watched as the woman that had introduced herself as Kiki approached him cautiously. She hid it fairly well, but he could tell that she was nervous, perhaps even scared. He had to wonder what could have made her so uneasy around him. Was it something he did? Or maybe it was because he was a brute? He wanted to ask, but he didn't know if that was a sensitive subject for her or not and didn't want to run off the only company he had been with in days. His ears flicked toward her as he listened to her kind words, a small, genuine smile crossing his muzzle. She seemed very sweet and appeared to sincerely care about what was bothering him. "I'm... I'm not very good at sharing my problems. he replied, a soft, almost nervous chuckle rumbling in his throat. He looked down at the water again, his reflection looking back at him. "I guess maybe it would be good to talk about it... As long as you really don't mind listening. You see... A while back my mother and sister and I were traveling through a blizzard. We were on the run, I guess. There was a brute that was after my mother and we were constantly on the run from him. My mother got hurt one day, I'm not sure what hurt her, she wouldn't say, but she became very weak. That was right before we had to move again, through this blizzard. I got separated from them in the snow. I've been searching for my sister ever since. I doubt my mother is still alive and I don't even know if my sister made it... But I'm searching for her. Just in case." His ears folded back against his head and he sighed, some of that weight creeping back onto his shoulders as he thought about it. "I just hope she's okay, wherever she is... It was my job to take care of them. We didn't have a father so it was my job... and I failed." He closed his eyes, struggling against the creeping depression. He shook his head, trying to clear it as he took a deep breath and let it out in a sigh. His sea-foam gaze looked up to her and a sad smile met his lips. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to unload like that... When it rains it pours I guess. He watched as she shifted uncomfortably, the movement reminding him of her heat once again. The scent met his nose, even stronger now that she was closer to him. He quickly turned his attention back to the river, his ears flicking back from embarrassment. It was one of the very few times he had ever been around a woman when she was in heat and he wasn't sure how to behave around her. He didn't really want to say anything, but the scent was so distracting. He cleared his throat, quickly turning to turn the attention away from it. "So, what about you? What's been on your mind?
