Odysseus watched with growing alarm as a red glow took over the heavens. The stars in the direction of the volcano were quickly blotted out by smoke and ash. He had just enough time squint at a strange ripple in the clouds when a percussive boom struck him with enough force to push him back a step. For perhaps the first time in his life Odysseus' shock showed on his face.
Though Shaye's howl instructed the wolves to head for the plains, Odysseus wasn't quite ready to leave. He knew one of the newer families denned nearby. The single mother would probably struggle to move her two children quickly and with the volcano on the verge of bursting every second mattered.
He raced to the den of Circe and, finding her trying to usher her pups towards the plains, quickly scruffed the little female after exchanging a look with her mother. Then, pup in tow, he took off towards the plains.
---
Reaching the temporary meeting place, Odysseus set the pup down and then stood waiting, his fur bristling and his eyes locked on the mountain.
