His attack against her leg failed as she was prepared for it. That was the problem with fighting the same person constantly, they became all too familiar with your tricks. Bast’s teeth got around Zee’s ankles, but despite Sirius’s words about being out for blood, the cat barely scraped skin with her teeth. Bast couldn’t quite bring herself to hurt the wolf who had always treated her with kindness, despite Sirius’s teachings.

Marshal saw his prey slither away, and cried a warning to Sirius, before going for the rump of the wolf, steering clear of her antlers so she did not skewer him. Sirius saw the approach of the serpent and moved to kick him away, rather than aiming to stomp. He had a feeling Zee wouldn’t forgive him if he killed her companion with his considerable bulk.

Zee turned her body and angled her antlers to skewer him from the side. Sirius turned at her approach, and aimed to grab at her antlers with his teeth before they could reach his body. If he was successful, he would drive his weight downwards in an attempt to push her head into the earth. If he was not, he would shove his head in between her horns to lesson the damage of their arrival.
