to catch the ocean

The world outside the den was massive, everything was new and shiny and fun. The pup was determined to make the most of his freedom, to enjoy every moment and find every wondrous experience the world had to offer him. His wandering took him to the shores of the ocean, and out past the water he could see island upon island. His tiny tail wagged excitedly behind him, though he restrained himself from trying to swim the length or cross the bridges that had been built. The danger of water had been drilled into him after his sister's experience, and he respected the giant blue water that could eat him at any moment.

While he stood at the shore looking out at the distance, new sounds bubbled up from the water around him. Waves crashed against the sand and threatened to eat at his paws and he skittered back fearfully, wondering how it was that the water could chase him that way. It receded then, leaving his feet dry and the sand in front of him visible once more. Was the water playing with him? Playing tag with his siblings was fun, and it seemed to be that the ocean enjoyed the game as well. He waited until the water moved towards him - moving his oversized paws backwards to avoid it's touch - and when it once again sank back into the ocean he darted forward to give chase.
