The Warlord shook snow from his coat, and put his nose back to earth, finding the scent he sought. The smell of prey was stronger, and he knew he was almost upon it. The snow continued to fall, and the Warlord knew his trap was well covered by a white layer. He came upon the steam at last, approaching from the opposite direction he had first seen his prey.

He let himself be seen, let the crunch of snow beneath his paws echo. The creature looked up, its bill still filled with the fish it had caught in water almost fully frozen. As it saw the danger, the stalk spread out its wings. It was not a bird that could catch flight in a heartbeat. It began to run, long legs splashing water, and then grass. Moments before it could lift into the air, its foot caught the trap he had prepared under the snow, and the limb broke with a snap. It crashed to the ground in a flurry of snow, and Sirius, who had already began to run, fell upon it.

He cut deeply into its neck, and put the creature from its misery, clearing away snow with his paws, and pulling the creature clear of the snapping trap he had placed well in its path. He broke the hinges of the trap so it could not cause havoc for no reason.
